Our next hotel was atop a hill in the town of Altomonte, aka the Wedding City, as over 300 couples each year choose to marry there! That’s it, right up there!

The views from the hotel were stunning, from the Pollino National Park and the Pellegrino mountains, across to the old part of the town on the opposite hill.

Way down below is the Church of Saint Francis of Paola with its beautiful walled garden.

Now for the old town.  There are only 360 steps to climb! Ready? Let’s go!

.

.

We’ve made it the top! This is the Church of the Madonna della Consolazione and the Dominican Monastery

The owners of our hotel, the Barbieri family also run a somewhat unusual restaurant next to the church. We took it over for the evening!

It’s time to head south to the ferry terminal. En route, we paused at the National Archaeological Museum to see two bronze statues from around 455 BC. I can’t think what the ladies were finding so interesting! Sicily, here we come!

It was well worth the climb! We had one day with clouds and light rain, otherwise, it was unseasonably warm and fine!

Every one of these would make a great jigsaw puzzle. LOVE the one with the ladies looking at the statue. The landscapes and houses ones are magnificent. The buildings have such character. The sky is big!

That’s a good point! I’ve had several of my pictures from the past made into jigsaws. I’m so pleased you are enjoying them, Lisa.

There is so much history there. Everywhere you look is amazing and all the pieces of things on roof tiles and home fronts. It is truly amazing and one wonders how long these places have been there and how they are cared for and patched up over time.

Love seeing the beautiful pictures of the old hillside towns and the landscape.

I was particularly intrigued by that one with modern sculptures in a classical courtyard. Curious about the story there.

They were created from large pieces of weathered timber. No explanation as to why they exist was offered.
