Matera is thought to be the oldest city in the world after Aleppo and Jericho. It has been used as a location for many movies, including the car chase scenes in James Bond’s No Time To Die.
It was once described as ‘the shame of Italy’ for its poor living standards. Cave houses were occupied until the 1950s.

I love the cave houses
I quite liked the look of it too!
Beautiful! The architecture is just something to behold. With all the walking involved in going around this place, I think a good pizza and gelato is needed! 😊
…and that’s exactly what I did, several days!
Oh nice!
Unbelievable carvings on what I believe is a church; remarkable craftsmanship! There are some truly glorious photos here, Keith!
Thanks, Nancy. Every person or creature, large or small, featured on the facade had a story behind it, each of which was explained to us by our guide. I’ve never seen anything like it before.
That’s amazing! How fortunate for you to experience such glorious workmanship; truly an art form. Thanks again for these incredible photos!
Amazing photos Keith thanks for sharing
The pleasure’s mine, I assure you.

Thanks, Sandee. Italy is an amazing country, I intend to see more of it in time.
Each week of photos you share leaves me itching to travel.
Looking at them makes me want to get out there again! Thanks, Mimi.
Amazing architecture…as are your photos.
That’s really nice of you Patricia, thank you.
Very gorgeous tho!
Thanks, Lydia!
It is such a fascinating place, but can you imagine living there? It would be so very different. Great photos and it would be a super fun place to visit, but not stay for too long.
It wouldn’t suit me!
What a beautiful place. What a wonderful place. Thanks for sharing it. Thanks for hosting and I hope that you have a wonderful week.
Thanks so much for your kind words.
I love all those little houses on the hillside, and the narrow alleys. Would be wonderful to explore in person.
And it’s sort of the opposite of my Wordless Wednesday, this week, architecturally speaking 🙂
They are incredble!
Oh my word, so gorgeous and reminds me of our Italy trip years and years ago. Thanks for the armchair travel trip down memory lane.

It was an amazing experience. Thanks, Debbie.
These pics are most beautiful! Thanks for sharing Italy’s hidden gems.
I’m so pleased you like them, thank you.
The architecture is beautiful. Thank you for the closeup details that add to their appreciation for me. You have captured such amazing scenes of your travels. You are blessed Keith. Thank you for sharing your photo gallery.
P.S. I like the last photo of the cobbled pathway and the houses and doors, it leaves such a genuine warm feel for the ancient times lived in that place. Amazing.
Thank you so much, Suzette, it’s amazing what you can acheive with a mobile phone these days! It was like going back in time.
