My last day on the beautiful island of Sicily was spent on volcanic Mount Etna!
First, the cable car….

.

.
…then the thing with big wheels…

.
…then on foot!

Picture time!

‘
Down we went into a crater.

.
Then suddenly, whoosh, there she blows!

.
Quite a view from up here!

.
Down we go!

.

‘
On our way back we visited a winery and vineyard on the lower slopes. The perfect way to end our holiday!

.

.

.

.
We had a guided tour, then a tasting!

.

.

.
All good things come to an end! Thanks for joining me on my trip over the past few weeks.
I’ll leave you with the one picture that always comes to mind when think back!

I had no idea you could go to the top of Mt. Etna. Wow! I have visited a winery in Italy, but it was near Lake Como and no worries of any eruptions.

I was a little alarmed when it suddenly started puffing smoke! Cheers!

When we went to Etna it was covered in snow but the snow was higher than the bus. The road had been cut ine. It was crazy. And if you kicked the ground steam would come up. There was lava in the crater. It was an amazing site. It errupted a week later.

I would love to have seen that! It was extremely cold up there. I pocketed a lump of lava which now has pride of place on my side table!

Mt Etna is not really a looker, but the view is wonderful and you have now checked that off your list of places to see. The winery looks much more interesting. What a lovely vacation and so many interesting things to see.

Cable car, big wheel thing, walking, climbing… that’s quite a schlep to get up there so if you don’t mind, I’ll wait for you down in the winery. Maybe this is a stupid question, but since it’s an active volcano, how does one know they’re not going to get caught in an eruption?

Beautiful. Volcanic cones and craters feel so other-worldly at times. I’ve been to one or two here – the black dirty/gravel has a distinctive look, and it’s always difficult to walk on, but worth the chance to explore a bit.
Thank you for bringing us along us the trip. I still hope to get to Italy as a whole (incl Sicily) one of these days.

We were given the option to carry on on foot or stay at the drop-off point. I’m so glad I chose the former. Sicily is a must!

Great photos, but I would be scared getting too close to the volcano. Am I mistaken or was there an eruption in the last week or so? When we were in Hawaii several years ago we visited an active volcano and some of the roads were closed to stop people getting too close.

There was indeed an eruption last week! I got pretty close on my visit and was a little alarmed when it suddenly started smoking!

Ah well – I see you were in your element … three to twenty-three – good odds … still I guess we have longer to enjoy our lives – perhaps! – … amazing trip it must have been … lots of history, gourmet food, good wine and lots of fun … cheers Hilary

The trip far exceeded my expectations, Hilary. Having done loads of long-hall holidays I thought it was time to explore closer to home and I’m so glad I did!
