One hundred words

.

I went to the library for a novel featuring cats. The only one I found wasn’t of much interest to me.

“Why aren’t there more?” I asked the grim-faced librarian.

She stared at me over her wire-framed spectacles but said nothing. I took a step back.

“I started to ask again. “Why…”

“I heard you the first time” she hissed, her menacing gaze giving me goose-bumps.

“I’m s-s-s-sorry”, I stuttered.

“Because” she whispered, placing her pen on the desk.

“Because?” I nervously asked, immediately wishing I hadn’t.

“Because…” she growled,

I looked for the door.

“…cats, only have one tail”.

That’s true Ami! I did actually write a nine-life cat story a while back!

Oh for heaven’s sake! Got me there, Keith!

  5. Anita's avatar Anita February 16, 2022 / 18:34

I thought she’d turn into a cat after growling 🙂
    Tail vs Tale !
Someone has to write another tale about cats 🙂

Oh no, you didn’t. Yes, yes you did! 🤣

  7. Dale's avatar Dale February 16, 2022 / 21:38

I was getting rather worried, there. And then zing!

      • Dale's avatar Dale February 17, 2022 / 16:43

That’s the best thing! When you are surprised by your own zing!

  8. msjadeli's avatar msjadeli February 16, 2022 / 21:42

You nailed the twist, Keith. Funny, she seemed rather cat-like also 🙂

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings February 17, 2022 / 16:56

Thanks, Lisa. Actually, her name was Catlin Felin!

For some reason I thought she was cat lady who would bring the room flooding with cats and kittens. Lol! So much for my imagination running helter-skelter.

You really tailed the cat. :-))

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings February 17, 2022 / 17:18

Now that would have been fun! As for your pun, meow!

  10. GHLearner's avatar GHLearner February 17, 2022 / 11:31

Aaaaah… LOL. I thought she’d turn into a cat and then, wham!

    Dear Keith,

I’m laughing. Glad I set my coffee aside so it didn’t snort out my nose. 😉 One tail…great play on words.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

A better reaction I could not have wished for! Thanks, Rochelle.

But they do have nine lives, right? With or without tales. Tails. 🙂

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings February 17, 2022 / 17:42

They do Linda, that’s enough for a series of tales. Tails!

My goodness, a grim-faced librarian! A slimey character with a slippery sense of dark humour. What about the book, The Nine Lives of a Ginger Puss. Too raunchy for her I suspect.

  14. plaridel's avatar plaridel February 17, 2022 / 18:57

ah, the librarian was no pussycat. 🙂

  15. Margaret's avatar Margaret February 18, 2022 / 06:30

    Scary librarian. Fun story.

  16. Bill's avatar Bill February 18, 2022 / 11:39

Ah, Keith, the ever clever use of ‘our’ language and its tricky, or even vexatious, homophones. Reading or listening makes all the difference. 🙂

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings February 18, 2022 / 15:38

Homophones, what would one-liner comedians do without them?

      • Bill's avatar Bill February 18, 2022 / 22:16

        I’ve no idea. 🙂

  17. draliman's avatar draliman February 18, 2022 / 16:40

Haha! I was waiting for the librarian to pounce for a minute!

Tee Hee … this made me chuckle. A quick-witted tale … no pun intended.
I loved where you took the photo, Keith. Have a wonderful weekend …
    Have a great week … Isadora 😎

Lovely wordplay – and a spot-on description of an icy librarian.

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings February 20, 2022 / 17:13

Thanks, Jilly. They used to be a bit like that in their silent surroundings!

Hahahaha good one, Keith. Her nervousness comes through clearly. Well done. She’s right though! 👀

I’m so pleased you liked it Laurie, thank you.
