I’ve just opened my curtain, just a little because it’s grey out there, very grey and it’s raining, not proper rain, just dreary drizzle.

I turned off the news channel because it’s all bad news about fuel prices going up, interest rates going up, infections going up; it goes on and on.

The last thing I heard didn’t surprise me, as apparently today, the third Monday of January is officially the most depressing day of the year, it’s called Blue Monday.

I’m off to work now and pacing around under a shelter about to take a boring bus trip on a rain-soaked road to get there and when I do everyone will be miserable, customers and staff alike.

But let’s look on the bright side, in about fifteen hours the most depressing day of the year will be behind us for another twelve months!

Having said that I’ve just heard tomorrow’s weather forecast and it’s much the same as today’s but at least it won’t be the third Monday of January!

It is the first time I heard of Blue Monday, but after searching it looks like a real thing (at least for northern climates). I’m glad the label is good for only 24 hours.

I quite agree! Apparently, the happiest day of the year is June 24th!

Nice that it ends on an optimistic note

Every day is a new day & we should be happy & enjoy everyday :).

I never heard about Blue Monday. Glad it never existed in my assessment of life. A wonderfully written Six.

A dismal tale. I shall feel blue now for the rest of the… Wait. It’s not Monday today. By now you must all be feeling mauve. 😉

I wrote in on Monday! It’s over now and I’m feeling mauvelous!

I never knew it was a real thing. Perhaps the western would feels more blue on the third Monday of January. 😂

Lol, good one Keith. Blue Monday sucks if you buy into it. I think calendar-makers are trying to annoy us with this and Friday the 13ths.

It’s been around for years, I’m surprised greetings card makers haven’t cashed in on it – yet!

On a lighter note, Keith, the moment I saw the title of your post the New Order song, ‘Blue Monday’ started playing in my head. Unsurprisingly, since one of my housemates played the record loudly every morning for an entire term when we were at Uni. Coincidentally, it’s his birthday today. Weird.

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings January 22, 2022 / 16:35

Much as I like it, hearing it loudly every day would drive me bonkers! As you say, quite a coincidence!

It was a long time ago, and I was much younger then (higher tolerance level then).

Blue Monday is finally a thing of the past. We move into Blue Tuesday, and so the week passes from one blue day to the next until Blue Friday rises and falls, transitioning the Blue Week into the Blue Weekend. The Blue Saturday and Blue Sunday blend into a single day that both lasts too long, and flies by too quickly, but then the Blue is gone and we move on.
    Alas, Gray Monday has come.

I thought you were sending us in the Blue Beyond, what a relief when you didn’t! A little bit of grey’s okay.

Your reading leaves me with a smile as your character’s voice is uplifted by story’s end. Here’s to always looking on the bright side!
btw, Keith, I too had no idea about “Blue Monday” but I’m with TAM. Enough already with the “official day for…”, lol

That last line made me laugh. I’d heard of blue Monday but I don’t really buy into it. Hope you have a nice weekend.

I was blissfully unaware of Blue Monday…and now hopefully I’ll forget it 🙂 I so loved your “six” because you captured the mood many of us have been treading water in for 2 years. Take good care of YOU–Blessings!

As you say, it’s best forgotten. I’m pleased you read the message beneath the words and thank you so much for dropping by.

Indeed it is! You’ve taught me a new word, dreich! Thanks, Jenne.

I did wonder if it would be new to you. It’s one of these untranslatable Scots words. Maybe you have a local equivalent?

      • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings January 24, 2022 / 13:48

I really can’t think of one! My 3-year-old granddaughter was born and lives in Scotland and is beginning to pick up Scottish lingo despite her parents being very English. I wonder if she’s using it yet!

      • jenne49's avatar jenne49 January 24, 2022 / 22:03

You can try it out on her, Keith. I’ll bet you granddaughter is a wee stoater! (But she’ll only understand that if they’re in Glasgow!)
