A tale on Wednesday…

for Friday Fictioneers

little-miku.regular (1)

The flight was perfect. Decent food, a drink or three and a movie.  Straight through immigration.  Everyone is smiling.  I’m happy, relaxed and looking forward to my hotel room, a bubbly bath then tucking into something spicy. Aaah, bliss!

There’s the bus.  What a charming driver!  This seat’s so comfy. Off we go.

Ooops, he slammed on the brakes.  Woo, we’re hurling forward.  We’re going ridiculously fast, swerving this way and that.  Mind that tuk-tuk, wooo, watch that car.  We’re turning left, right, right (utter a prayer) left, stop, start, stop…and…we’re…there.

I’m exhausted.  I’m queazy.  Where’s the toilet?  Where’s my bed?

asian-busThanks to Rochelle for hosting and to  Fatimer Fakier Deria for the photo.

Stop Froggie to join in the fun!

    Wow! A crazy ride.

      • Sadje's avatar Sadje December 4, 2019 / 14:17

If it’s in an Asian country, I can readily believe it.

I had my first visit to Delhi in mind. I’m used to it now!

      • Sadje's avatar Sadje December 4, 2019 / 17:34

I’ve heard the traffic is very bad there.

      • A.S.'s avatar A.S. December 4, 2019 / 17:51

Take it from an Indian, it is very bad indeed! Not at all a good idea to take your private car.

      • Sadje's avatar Sadje December 7, 2019 / 14:21

If I ever visit I will be careful. Thanks 😊

    Dear Keith,

That left me breathless. Wild ride.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

I hope you soon get your breath back Rochelle! That’s what comes of letting Froggie drive a bus!

What a difference one short ride can make — coupled with a drink or three. Traveller’s Tip: Gravol and water only on flights to that city.

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings December 4, 2019 / 14:17

Good advice Christine! I have had a few hair-raising rides in India!

All about perception, in some non-Western countries they drive like maniacs and are very good at it. Just hold your breath…
    Enjoyed the realism.

Personally I love it! I’m sure visitors to London find it all painfully slow!

Ha ha – that was completely believable and reminded of my first ride in a tuk-tuk in Delhi. I honestly thought I was going to die. 🙂

Me too, but after a while you get used to them and they are the best and cheapest way of getting around cities! They had them over here in Brighton for a while but the taxi drivers objected and they got stopped by the council.

Not quite the relaxing holiday he was looking forward to! Hopefully if he makes it to the hotel things might be a little calmer!

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings December 4, 2019 / 17:20

…or he’ll just get used to it, I did and now it’s part of the fun!

Thanks for sharing your experience on a real-life adrenalin-pumping ride. Reminds me of how one of my old co-workers drives!

Should I make it out there one day, I shall make sure I save the drinking for AFTER my tuk tuk ride!
This was fun and didn’t deter me at all…

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings December 6, 2019 / 10:08

Great, go for it! It’s exhausting and exhilarating at the same time.

Aww! Sounds like 3 more drinks might be necessary to relieve the stress of that ride! 🙂

A nice, stiff drink will banish the queasiness! Sounds exciting, Keith!

This very greatly reminds me of the bus trip from the aeroporte on Grenada (Island) to the Harbor at St. Georges. A mini-bus crammed to the rafters, high speeds, narrow roads on slants that make the term “Volcanic Protuberence” more than understood. Great story, Keith, and thanks for that memory… I think I’ll skip breakfast, now… even the memory leaves me queasy. LOL!

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings December 6, 2019 / 09:58

I’ve had a few trips like that! Sorry about breakfast – enjoy lunch!

I’ve had a foreign taxi-ride or two like that – all one can do is shut one’s eyes and pray!

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings December 6, 2019 / 09:56

I do find riding in tuk tuks quite exciting – as long you hang on tightly! Thanks Liz.

So much for being relaxed and happy. Now, he needs a good lie down and some Maalox. Maybe a bubbly bath and something spicy tomorrow. Entertaining story as always!

Someone needs driving lessons? Having looked up tuk~tuk I noticed that you’re the first one to take advantage of the fact that the picture was taken somewhere in Thailand

I had a bus ride or two like that in the Canary Islands next to a very steep cliff edge. Definitely needed a drink afterwards. Lovely piece.

I’ve never been on a ride like this but I can relate to the feelings of looking forward to a relaxing evening in a comfy hotel only to have it way laid by something stupid….like traffic!
    Well written, very relatable.
