They agreed to meet at the signpost in the park. After months of slowly drifting apart, they’d reached a crossroads. Which way to go?
Walking slowly, heads bowed, the only sound was the swishing of grass beneath their feet.
He picked her a flower, she pushed it away. He tickling her nose with it and saw a hint of a smile.
He held her arm as they descended some steps then they strolled hand in hand towards the lake. Still, not a word passed between them.
They sat in silence watching two swans, then slowly turned to face each other.
The signpost became a distant memory.

Thanks to Rochelle for hosting and Dale Rogerson for the photo.
Prod the frogs to join in the fun.

Not sure she liked her nose being tickled?
I liked the quietness of this story.
It wouldn’t have been as quiet if she’d sneezed! Cheers Tannille.
Might have ruined the mood 😀
Poignant, and written with control
Thanks so much. Not my normal style but I thought it worth a try!
Dear Keith,
Such a sweet meeting. I hope this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. <3
Shalom,
Rochelle
Looks like it’s heading in the right direction! Thanks Rochelle.
Such a sweet, sweet story.
That’s so kind of you, thanks so much.
Beautifully captured emotional journey!
Thanks so much Reena
You soppy git, as Del Boy might say!
Mange tout CE, mange tout!
Ah shucks, you old romantic Keith 🙂
Aww, don’t, you’ll make me blush!
Quite a departure for you, Keith, and beautifully done, in a restrained, understated way.
I admit my finger hovered over the publish button for a while wondering if I was doing the right thing! Thanks so much for your encouraging words Sandra.
I sometimes feel that way myself when I write out of character. Indulge yourself – it was certainly worth it.
I like this a lot – I really recognise that crossroads moment and the fear that your heart is about to get broken. I’m glad this couple turn it around.
Hooray as well for this being a departure from your usual style, and you’ve done a really good job. I tried writing romance recently and it turned somehow into a dark political fantasy with love in sight. 🙈
Haha! At least you tried! Thanks so much.
Neil, you’ve been quite the romantic lately. Loved the quietness and the happy ending.
Don’t know why I said “Neil.” He must have been the last one I read before yours. Keith. I knew it was you 🙂
As they say, a change is as good as rest! Normal service will be resumed shortly!
This is lovely Keith. Swans mate for life……………. and I love swans!
I wondered if anyone would make that connection – and you did! Thanks Di.
I did this post on soul mates when I first started my blog:
https://pensitivity101.wordpress.com/2013/12/16/soul-mates/
My Mum loved swans and after my Dad died, we adopted one for her birthday. Sadly he disappeared without trace, but we had several on the marina so I was able to update Mum with news from a very personal angle.
What a lovely gesture. I just visited your post, and it’s informative as well as proof that opposites attract!
Thanks Keith. Hubby and I have been together over 30 years now and our backgrounds are totally different, yet we are your traditional pair of old comfy slippers.
Aww, that’s lovely!
🙂 Thanks.
Awwww…. and Mr. Froggie met Ms. Froggette! 🙂
A match spawned in heaven!
LOL!!
This was absolutely lovely, Keith… You softie, you!
Thanks Dale – I usually save my softie side for my poetry blog!
I shall have to go snooping 🙂

A sweet and well-written story, Keith. I also loved the romantic frogs. 🙂 — Suzanne
Thanks Suzanne, I’m sure they’ll be very happy – the frogs and my couple!
Aw, young love 🙂 You’ve been at the Photoshop again, fun!
How did you guess? I usually spend longer on Froggie than I do writing my story!
So romantic, Keith. I love the delicacy of the story, with the lovely swans at the end, one wonder replaced with another. And you know I love your froggies, this time a gentleman and a lady.
That’s so kind of you, thanks so much. Even frogs have feelings!
🙂
Aaww! A romantic ending!
It is, thanks Liz (that rhymes!)
Awwww glorious! A lovely story of love
Thanks so much Laurie
it’s lovely. a new beginning beckons. 🙂
Indeed it does. Thanks plaridel.
A lyrically fluid sensitive write, Keith. I could feel the hesitations between them.
Perhaps, there could be a hopeful connection. Nicely written … loved it.
Isadora 😎
One day soon I feel. Thanks so much Isadora.
I liked the way you made use of the fidelity of swans to emphasize that this couple were truly in love. Nice romance, Keith.
Swans really are the most romantic of birds. Thanks Penny.
Lovely cute story… A nice break away from your usual breaking of hearts!
I’m good at breaking hearts Angie!
LOL, I have definitely noticed that!
How sweet. I envisioned the couple as young in my first read, then aged in the second. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks so much for dropping by and your delightful comment.
Awwww. Sometimes you just need to take a walk and think together.
Absolutely. Time away from everything else that’s going on. Thanks Mimi.
Sigh. Lovely!
Aww, thank you Sascha!
Really enjoyed the calmness of this story and the sweet gestures within. Easily imagined.
That’s so kind of you, thanks so much.
From bittersweet resignation to sweet reconnection. Nicely understated Keith. Understatement is a tool rarely utilized in our garish, high-beam headlight media world.
It is indeed. Thanks so much for your generous words.
Keith, this was beautifully poignant and unlike my character, yours seem to be heading onward and upwards. Happy days ahead.
Best wishes,
Rowena
I don’t often treat my subjects that nicely! Thanks Rowena.
Ha! They might be getting payback.
Ahhhh…love…. 🙂
Thanks so much Dawn.
