The door of The Baaamy Inn flew open ond in rushed windswept Wendy, her normally pristine hair a tangled mess; her fellow knitters looked at her in disbelief as she walked their way looking very much like a scarecrow; “what are you wearing?”, asked Polly, “well”, said Wendy, “as you know I’m all for recycling and I found this great big sack in the loft and thought that if I was to cut a hole in the bottom and one each side I could wear it as a dress”; as well as looking a little odd, it was clearly quite itchy, which made knitting somewhat difficult, plain, purl, scratch, plain, purl, scratch…!

Babs overheard the conversion and was reminded of Sunday’s church service, “Dick the Vic was in a strange mood, you should have heard his sermon, he said we should all wear sackcloth and ashes after committing misdeeds, then he stared at the lady next to me and said ‘especally sins of the flesh’; clearly he knows something we don’t, well the poor woman’s face turned bright red – which reminds me, I must harvest my beetroots tomorrow morning”.

“On the way here I delivered a sack of spuds to Ric at the cornershop” said Ted, “toffee-nosed Thomas was in there, he walked up the counter and said,  ‘Richard dear chap, I wish to pay for this delicious sandwich with cheese and tomatoes’, and Ric jokingly said, ‘sorry Tom, we only accept cash or cards’, you should have seen his face!”

“A man asked a frog how to open a sack of potatoes”, said Colin, “and it said rip it – I bought a  sack of birdseeds, they haven’t started growing yet – when I buy garbage sacks I feel like I am throwing money away – a chap got sacked from a calender factory because he took several days off – I got sacked from my job as a fortune teller, I didn’t see that coming – I accidentally swallowed a bag of scrabble letters, my next trip to the bathroom could spell disaster….”

A chap walked up to the bar and without saying a word he looked Len in the eye, pointed to a beer pump, and put the correct change on the counter, then he took his pint, walked away and sat down; a few minutes later Arthur was buying a round and Len quietly said, “see that guy over there, he looks familiar but I can’t think why, who is he?”, they looked toward the table and there was noone there, just an empty beer tankard.

Several years ago Len employed a bar tender called Claud, he was not the friendliest of guys and could be a little curmudgeonly at times so eventually he was given the sack; Maggie thought that was a little unfair and was sure that with a little bit of help he could have become better at the job, after all it was all he had, it was his life – she was right because a few days later he passed away; ‘you shouldn’t have done it’, she said, ‘he’ll come back to haunt you, you see’.

We actually had a company that started printing flowers on their feed sacks since during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as so many mothers were having to make dresses out of feed sacks because they were so poor. Wonderful Six as always, Keith.

Bad form for the pastor to call out sins from the pulpit, but a funny story for us. The whole thing is funny, except possibly the ghost. They aren’t very funny, no funny bone any more, I guess.

While I am now (as in the last 30 years) a real estate broker, sometimes when speaking to others in ‘the Persuasive Arts’, I look around to see if there are real people (aka civilized and proper and such) in earshot and, if not, I might, akin to stories of being in the French Foreign Legion, let it slip that I spent a number of years rising through the ranks of timeshare sales and marketing…
