A short story

Come on shadow, keep up. I know you’ve got wet feet, so have I.  I didn’t deliberately step in that puddle, so stop your moaning. At least it’s not as bad as that dog turd you made me step in yesterday.

Don’t whisper, I can’t hear you. What did you say? You want to hold my hand? You can’t because you are down there and I’m up here. I promise we will when we get to that wall, OK?

Why do you keep slowing down? I hate it when you drag my feet like that. At this rate it’ll be a miracle if we make it home by midnight. Yes, I know you are tired, so am I.

Now where have you gone? For goodness sake stop messing me around. There you are.  Now listen, when we approach a street light you follow me. When we’ve passed a street light I follow you. Got it? I’m in charge and those are the rules, you should jolly well stick to them.

Tell you what, I’ll race you the rest of the way. Ready… steady… go.

VERY clever, Keith. Light-hearted and steady, even under the challenge of sticking together through night time!
