November the Fifth is Bonfire Night, and the biggest celebration in the UK takes place in Lewes, East Sussex. The town’s seven bonfire societies are joined by many others that form a seemingly never ending procession!
Not only does it commemorate the Gunpowder plot of 1605, but also the burning on crosses of seventeen Prodestant martyrs in the town in 1556.
Because of overcrowding, it’s no longer possible to get there by train and car parking is near impossible! I took these back in 2008 when I was still able to turn up and enjoy myself – you may have difficulty making out what on earth’s going on, but they are quite colourful!

My village pub was home to a double celebration of Bonfire Night and Halloween. In the year we became landlord and lady of The Brewers Arms, the procession was headed by an enormous flaming banner – Welcome Keith Sarah it says in case you can’t make out the words! These pics are from 1998!

I didn’t know about the burning of the crosses. I did learn that Guy Fawkes wasn’t the mastermind and just the explosives expert involved….that’s my fun fact. Bonfire night used to be big here and now it’s not really at all, Eclipsed by Halloween (and Melbourne cup_)

Halloween hasn’t quite taken over here yet although it’s trying! There are a lot of joint celebrations like the one I held at my pub.

Wow! Talk about man’s fascination with fire! This must be something incredible to see in person.
It’s incredble! The procession is followed by seven different bonfires and firework displays! My village event was a much more tame affair!
Looks amazing, I haven’t been to a procession this year, I usually go to Littlehampton but Lewes looks great.
It’s incredible. Such a shame they no longer allow trains to stop at Lewes station on the 5th, but understandable though. Years ago they put on extra trains!
That is a real shame!
Never heard of that celebration. It seems a bit dangerous with so much fire and so many people. Mom is scared of fire, so it would not be an event for her, but I guess plenty of people really enjoy it.
There certainly is a lot of fire! You need to stand well clear!
Hi Keith – one visit was enough for me – and I managed to get there in the days when the trains still went. It’s interesting to see … and certainly brings communities together … the barrel rolling was interesting to watch – when I went the barrels were controlled … I don’t think on wheels back then. Great pictures you’ve shown us … and what fun you had over at Vines Cross … excellent times – now sadly gone – cheers Hilary
I’ve just read that 40,000 people attended it last night! Quite a crowd for a small town with 8000 residents!
The barrel rolling was fun – down the hill and into the river!
Vines Cross is very different now. The pub’s dull and characterless, the bonfire/halloween event ended soon after I left. They were happy days!
