A good idea?

.

.

How often have you said to yourself, ‘it seemed a good idea at the time’? I remember the time my mate Mike said it!

There was a lake near where we  lived as kids, and I spent ages there with my friends Sally and Mike. We fed ducks, caught tadpoles and slid around on the ice when it froze over in the winter.

Our fathers each had small boats there, they still have in fact. They’ve always been keen freshwater fishermen.

Back in the Summer Mike surprised us by saying he’d decided to take up snorkelling; he said he saw himself as a human submarine! Given he was never a particularly good swimmer we were somewhat surprised.

He suggested going down to the lake and practising there before braving the sea! He’d got the okay from his Dad to borrow his boat.

We just knew it would be a bit of a laugh, so Mike, Sally (now my wife, but that’s another story!) and I drove back there. It was just as we remembered it, a bit brown with patches of slimy algae all over the place!

You should have seen Mike in his skin tight wetsuit – on second thoughts, I’m pleased for your sake you didn’t, there wasn’t much left to the imagination!

Sally was always a spanking paddler, so she volunteered to be the oarsperson (pc word, I believe!). I was happy just to look on!

They climbed aboard the lttle boat, Sally sitting and Mike standing to attention in readiness for his first snork!

‘Obble-ible-oble’ he said, pointing out across the water. Speaking with a snorkel stuck in your mouth can’t be easy!

Sally started rowing but they didn’t get very far. Unfortunately, I’d forgotten my one and only task – the boat was still tied to the bank! It jerked to a halt and poor Mike toppled head first into the water. Ignoring our laughter he climbed back aboard.

I untethered the boat. Take two. Off they went stopping a few yards out. Mike held his hands aloft. I beat out a drumroll on the picnic bench, ‘three…two…one…’ I shouted!

I wish you could have seen what happened next!

Mike jumped into the water unaware that where they stopped it was only two feet deep, or in his case two knees deep! Mike  standing there was one of the funniest things we’ve ever seen!

Mike surprised us the other day that he’s going to take up rock climbing…

Haha! This was delightfully funny except for poor mike and his mishaps. You know I’m a human submarine – A least I sink like one whenever I try to swim!

If I were Mike, I wouldn’t invite his two untrustworthy friends on his next adventure!

If I had a penny for everytime I thought that it was a good idea, I would a very rich woman indeed. Haha. That’s a hilarious story indeed, Keith. Well, one can’t say that Mike doesn’t have high hopes. Hopefully, his hopes won’t come plummeting down after his first climb 😂

I’d be pretty well off too, Shweta!

He said he’s going to leave a couple of cushions down below just in case!
