The tidewater ebbed leaving dregs of sable driftwood in its wake. As the sun dropped below the horizon, darkness shrouded the shore.
*
A macabre character and three infants strolled along the street, each draped in a black flowing robe, their faces, void.
Now and again they stopped beside a door. As he plucked the strings of a guitar, it emitted an ear-piercing jangle. The little ones sang, their screeching voices echoing into the distance.
Startled folk anxiously peeped from behind their curtains.
*
Come dawn, the flowing tide gathered the driftwood from the sand and swept it back out to sea.

Very fitting to the photo and the season, Keith
Thanks so much, Neil.
Who knew there were Halloween carolers? Wonderful take on the prompt, Keith.
Now ya’ know! Cheers, Dale.
😊
Spooky stuff, Keith. This one gave me a chill. I’ll not be opening my door to the screeching voices of little children!
I can’t say I blame you! Thanks, Nancy.
Singing in a robe sounds so darn spooky!
That’s what I thought!
Very fitting and evocative take on the photo this week. Well done, Keith.
Thanks for you generous words, Sandra.
Spooky children love to show up at our doors on Halloween
Not mine, there 58 steps up to my door and they can’t be bothered!
lucky for you!)
Keith, best chiller I’ve read this Halloween season. Dang, gave me goosebumps when the children started singing.
What a lovely thing to say! Thanks so much Lisa – thanks too for the picture, it’s taken us all over the place!
You’re very welcome and love the stories coming out of it.
A fabulously mysterious tale, good stuff
Thanks so much!
Oh this is so chilling and apt for Halloween
Kind of you to say so, Sadje, thank you.
Always a pleasure
I’d be afraid to even peep!
Me too, Mimi!
Love it! You captured creepy but in a twisted way endearing.
Thanks so much!
Dear Keith,
An eerie piece for the season. Love your sound effects.
Shalom,
Rochelle
Thanks so much, Rochelle!
A story that captures the essence of Halloween as ghost from the past torment us with songs and strained music. Great story.
Thanks for your kind words, James.
just in time for halloween. glad nobody opened the door for them.
So true, I certainly would not have!
Wonderful spooky story!
Woooo! Thanks, Dawn!
The perfect Halloween story, plays like a movie in my head (and would be a better movie than most of the genre). I’m glad you also saw that thing holding a guitar.
I also saw a mother and children, but your story is much more spooky and very seasonal!
Ooooooo
I love this Keith
Very spooky
You created a terrific atmosphere with this one.
