She wasn’t a drinker, so when she left the bar worse-for-wear I was somewhat concerned. She walked towards the bridge. I knew what she intended doing, but I didn’t try stopping her. After all, she’d led a miserable existence.
They never found her. They assumed she was swept down river and into the ocean.
That’s what I tell people. The truth?
Yes, she stood on the bridge, and as crowded bus passed, she jumped. But I was below, waiting to drag her from the water.
She has a new life far away now.
But you didn’t hear it from me.

I’m not sure if this is a happy ending or not. I’m leaning toward knight in shining armor to the rescue but can’t help thinking about our heroine with the miserable existence chained up in the basement of some looney stalker guy.
I had in mind the former – but now you’ve got me wondering!
