A quick story…

for Rochelle’s Friday Fictioneers photo prompt.

Twenty runners line up. Ready..steady…go!

‘Down a track, leap a fence, cross a field, down a bank, splash across a stream, climb a rock, slide down a rock, and…stop’.

Glance behind. Nobody. ‘I’m well ahead’.

Consult notes.

Up footpath…no, down footpath. Over a fence…what fence? Circle a lake….where’s the lake? Ah, a pond, that’ll do. Run run…!

There’s a pub. We’re finishing at a pub, that must be it!’

The Red Lion. Nineteen exhausted runners enjoy a well-deserved beer.

The Crown Inn. One smug runner sups a celebratory pint.

They must still be running, I’ve won!’

    Dear Keith,

Hm. My guess is The Crown is the wrong pub. Fun run that left me breathless in any event.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

I guess your guess is right, Rochelle! I hope you’ve got your breath back by now!

Ha! Reminds me of a group of us meeting up at the White Hart. Trouble was, there were TWO White Harts in the same village, one at each end!

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings January 26, 2024 / 12:17

That must have been confusing! I had a similar situation with my pub, The Brewers Arms because there was another hostelry with the same name in a nearby village. We were forever receiving each other’s deliveries of beer etc!

Oh wow. What a mix up!

Lol! Hope it’s the right pub…but then again, he’s happy with his pint…Well told story as always Keith. I almost had to take notes to figure out who was going which way!!

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings January 26, 2024 / 13:21

Sadly not, he did get hopelessly lost! The others will be wondering where he’s got to by now!

Up…down…to…fro… It’s those prepositions that confuse a person. Well told, Keith.

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings January 26, 2024 / 13:34

Thanks Christine – they’d confuse me alright!

Exactly! Who cares if he ended up in the wrong place?

      • Sadje's avatar Sadje January 26, 2024 / 15:53

Yes, as long as they are are happy.

Is it a race if you are on your own course. At least he will not have to stump up for a full round of drinks for everyone else. Or did they deliberately give him the wrong race instructions. He-he.

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings January 26, 2024 / 14:21

I’d rather think he simply got totally lost! Good point about the drinks – 20 pints could prove to be quite expensive!

  11. msjadeli's avatar msjadeli January 26, 2024 / 05:25

He is a winner in his own mind and that’s all that matters. I admire his exuberance and agree, he *is* a winner!

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings January 26, 2024 / 14:30

I couldn’t agree more, Lisa! *Congratulations!*

Pubs are usually a driving force. Wash it down with a beer or few.

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings January 26, 2024 / 14:39

That’s what I used to tell my customers when I ran a pub – I’d say anything to drive up sales!

That definitely calls for a nice cold one.
    Very fun, enjoyable story!
