One musical journey

Those were the days my friend! Things were simpler then. Want some music in the car? Bung in a cassette.

Okay, they got stuck now and again, but stick a pencil in a hole, twist, and away it went again. That’s what pencils were made for in those days!

Do you remember seeing jumbles of tape glistening in the sunshine along the side of the road? I do, mind you, I would never have thrown a tangled cassette out of my car window, no matter how cross I was with it. I was far too environmentally conscious, even back then.

The Beatles, The Stones, The…erm…others; my glove box was stuffed full of tapes by my favourite bands and artists.

One musical journey will forever stay in my mind. I was on my way to somewhere special to meet someone special, though her name escapes me now. I was singing along to a cassette of…well, I don’t recall who, but it was fabulous. Then it dawned on me, I was driving up the right-hand lane of the motorway, and we are supposed to use the left one here in the UkieKookie!

I remember laying in a hospital bed listening to music on my cassette player…

haha! That was a good read and listen Keith. You have a wonderful way of reading your stories.
I remember my parents using a multitool pencil to get a tape spooled and working again. Fortunately, they never drove me up the wrong side of the motorway though! Well done, my friend.

Thanks, Mason. The wrong side of the road idea came to me as soon as I saw the picture!

I think it was a great idea for the prompt.

I have a friend who would like a new car but nowadays they do not have CD players, let alone cassette decks.

My first car only had a radio which took ages to warm up and get going!

Yes, those were the days… pencils were quite handy for tape repair.
    Hope your recovery was swift.

Good take on the prompt! I remember taking Driver’s Ed back in those days. I remember the teacher saying, “Keep your eyes on the road. Don’t ever let anything else distract you when you’re driving.” Some things never change. 🙂

Thanks, Christine. Very wise advice! A shame some don’t heed it though.

True. I read about one woman ticketed for putting on mascara while driving to work. wouldn’t want to be in the lane beside her. 🙁

Ah, those great old memories of tons of cassettes in the glove box and jumbled tapes along the road or on a beach. Never! It was a challenge rewinding the tapes with our trusty pencils. Funny, driving on the right side of the road looks perfectly normal to me! Another good one, Keith!

Yes, wonderful memories. I still have quite a few cassettes – but nothing to play them on! Thanks, Nancy.

I think we have an old boombox in the basement which my sons used in the 90s! It’s next to our box of slides, VHS tapes and a couple of wine skins! 😂

Slides – something else I’d forgotten I’d got!

I remember one of the requirements when changing my car was to have a cassette player in it!

We had a CD player in the I10 and never used it. There’s one in the citroen too, but Hubby prefers to use his USB key.

Your stories have something unexpected at the end. But loved the story and the way you narrated it. Thanks for joining in Keith.

From a simple am radio, to am/fm, to cassettes, to 8-tracks (those were short lived, thank heaven) to cds. Now, who needs any of it, when you have a phone?

    Fun story.

It’s always best to have a pencil handy.

A multi-functional object, especially if it has an eraser on the end – very useful for using with mobile phone screens!

Haha that’s the way to go
