Pickie time!

For Wordless Wednesday and bloghops various!

Day 3 of my camping trip

.

Wells in Somerset, with its historic centre, the magnificent cathedral, and the unique moated Bishop’s Palace, is the smallest city in England.

Click pics once or twice to enlarge and improve!

.

.

.

Built between 1175 and 1490 Wells Cathedral has been described as “the most poetic of the English Cathedrals”.

Let’s step inside

In 1313 the central tower was built, but soon after it started to subside. The Scissor Arches were built in 1348 and have held it in place ever since!

.

.

.

.

The chained books in the Cathedral Library are from the 16th century.

This door has been used by Bishops entering the Cathedral from 1740 to the present day.

This street is a Medieval street known as Vicars Close.

.

.

Now to the moated walls of the Bishops Palace.

.

.

.

Farewell Wells!

.

While I was in the Cathedral a choir from Philadelphia USA was preparing for a concert!

…and then they sang Moon River!

Sorry about the enormous number of photos, I couldn’t decide which ones to leave out!

Add your link to join in the fun!

Thank you for sharing all the photos. I love the cathedral both outside and inside. I have never seen books chained before… fascinating!

My turn to feature a cathedral! As for chained books, nor have I. Perhaps book theft was rife back in the 1500s!

You are so kind, Maria. I was so fortunate to enter the cathedral when I did.

They needed to all be here, i promise. Dona Nobis Pacem, a lovely hymn to hear in a cathedral. Moon River was lovely, too.

Cathedrals are so amazing. They are all over in Europe too and although they are the same basic style, they are all so different. It is amazing how they built such large intricate things so many years ago.

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings August 11, 2023 / 10:16

I agree, they had none of today’s machinery to help them. How they built those beautiful scissor arches 700 years ago beats me.

Beautiful little town. The cathedral and castle of course, but I am particularly partial to that public square. Looks like a lovely place to pass the time (we don’t have many such spots in US cities and towns, though we’re getting more of them gradually).

It’s a lovely open space – the coffee was nice too!

I have to ask… have you ever been to Sicily??? That’s where my mom’s side of the family is from! I have cousins there I hear too! I would love, love, love to go there, but if Rome is the only option… SO BE IT!!! TAKE ME ALONG!!! I want to go see every Cathedral there. I love looking at them. Also, I would love just to put my hands on the floor or wall just to get the vibes of days gone by!!! I swear some how, some way I want to go there… Amen!!!
