“Now what have you got?” asked Fiona as Bob staggered through the front door with his latest acquisition. After knocking over the hall table and crashing into a door frame, he let out a sigh of relief as he lowered the weighty piece of furniture to the floor.

With hands on hips, Fiona looked down at the cabinet, up at Bob’s sweating face, then down again.

“ Why?” she begged.

“Why not? It’s wonderful” he said, stroking its well-worn surface.

“It’s tatty, it’s a mess, it’s…”.

“It’s what they call shabby chic”, said Bob, “every mark has a story to tell, every stain, a memory from a time gone by”.

“You’ll be a memory from a time gone by if you keep bringing home junk like this!” she shouted.

It was then she spotted it.

“What on earth is that on the lawn?”

“I knew you’d like it, Fiona, it’s magnificent, isn’t it?”

“Magnificent?”

“It’s a modernist sculpture created from discarded pieces of metal, its timeworn appearance adds character”.

“So it’s shabby chic indoors, rusty chick outdoors”.

Yesterday, Bob was polishing his car when he spotted some minor imperfections. He loved his Ford Fiesta, his faithful friend he called it. They’d spent many happy years together.

“Darling”, he called as he rubbed a little scratch with his duster, “I think it’s time I replaced my car, it has a few blemishes”.

She turned to him and stared. She didn’t need to say a thing. He knew exactly what she was thinking!

“So it’s shabby chic indoors, rusty chick outdoors”. Love it, Keith.
That’s the thing when you’ve ‘spent many happy years together’ – a stare says it all.
I reckon he got the message.

I am not sure what to make of the outdoor “sculpture” piece. Excellent story Keith, …what’s old is new style again. And, to one its trash; but, to another…treasure.

Great tale! And the sculpture is unique, that’s for sure. I can picture all sizes of birds resting on it.

Just as long as you are not tired of me saying it. I can’t seem to think up a better comment. Easier to copy/paste one that’s true. 😉

I love the part where she says ” ‘Why?’ she begged.” You got me chuckling especially at the unspoken punchline.

If he keeps that up, Fiona will soon turn him into a thing-a-ma-Bob for their front lawn! Loved this one, Keith!

Fiona has my sympathy. I married an archaeologist, they make a living digging through the trash. He brought all kinds of crazy stuff home, and taught all 4 kids to do the same!

Hate to say it* but I would not refuse the offer of such a work of ferrous fantasy for my front yard.

    Fun story/image take
