For Six Sentence Stories where the given word is Date.
.
.
He was so excited, for years he’d watched big sister preen herself before her mirror in preparation for her latest date and now it was his turn; he was only five feet tall and had a chin as smooth as a baby’s bum but it was time to put away his Action man and claim his own Barbie doll!
What to wear, now there’s a problem because until today he put on whatever his Mum chose for him, but for the first time in his life, HE was going to decide whether it should be the laid-back look with jeans and a tee shirt or that smart pair of Chinos he wasn’t sure about when he was given them back in the summer.
He felt a little sick, his stomach gurgled, and he felt giddy; pull yourself together he said, today’s the first day of the rest of your life, your grown-up life.
He swaggered like a man along the road towards the park and walked over to the third bench on the right beside the duck pond, but she wasn’t there yet, then again he was a little early.
Ten minutes later he was still waiting, girls like to keep boys waiting, that’s what his sister told him, then the sun went down, the playground emptied and the ducks swam back to their island as he tried to stop a tear trickling down his cheek.
It was true what they said about girls, he should have listened to his mates because they’d be having fun finishing the camp they were building in the woods while he was being stood up on this first date.

Oops, I hit send too soon.
That should say “cheering” him on.

She should at least have had some courtesy and ‘rung’ him up on the phone with some phony excuse.

Like most of life’s adventures, the preparation is the fun part.
He’s probably already planning to ask somebody out so he can stand her up.

Nice tale of an unfortunate first date. I liked your description of his intention: “to put away his Action man and claim his own Barbie doll” It kind of makes me think that arranged marriages would alleviate this problem.

Another great tale, Keith. You have us all in sympathy with the poor guy. We’ve had young employees who promised to be at work at 8am sharp and they never showed up, either. 😦

Somehow, being stood up on your very first date is more heartbreaking. Even more so when the heart is so young.
Delightful as always, Keith!

Oh, no, there is nothing worse than being stood up. I feel so sorry for him. Well done, the tear was a wonderful addition.
