Every Christmas she placed a box on the table, a brown box tied with a red ribbon. I never knew what to expect when I opened it. Something sensible, something tasty, something silly!
One year when I opened it I was showered with silver stars before discovering inside a CD called Starstruck!
Sadly I lost her soon after last Christmas. Fittingly, she’d gifted me a little album containing photographs of us taken over the years. I stowed the box away in the loft.
Yesterday, Christmas day, I got up early and made myself a cup of coffee and took it into the lounge. To my surprise, there on the table was the brown box tied with a red ribbon.
My initial thought was that one of our kids had placed it there, and maybe put something inside, knowing how much it meant to me.
I carefully untied the bow, lifted the lid and inside was a little heart, cut from a piece of pink paper.
The kids promised me it was not of their doing, which only left one explanation, one which few would believe, but I did.
Thank you, dearest, thank you.
