A short story, written by my Sunday Muse.
/
We were sitting at our favourite table in our favourite coffee bar. A table in a corner, away from the gaze of other coffee aficionados. We sat hand in hand, gazing into each other’s eyes, our all hearts a-flutter!
Then something happened, something that changed my life in a moment. I heard a voice in my ear. A voice I knew only too well.
“I’m watching you,” it said.
I was stunned. I spun around but saw nobody I recognised. As I leapt to my feet I knocked over my mug spilling coffee across the table.
“I, erm, have to, erm, leave, sorry”, I stammered.
When I got home an open suitcase lay on the doorstep, my clothes, my laptop, and my nick-nacks strewn all across the path.
I’ve seen neither my wife nor my ‘petite amie’ from that day to this.
I know it sounds crazy, but whenever I did something I shouldn’t, no matter how trivial like having that extra drink or parking my car where I shouldn’t, I heard that voice in my ear.
“I’m watching you”.
I’m in a new relationship now. I’ve sworn to be faithful and never do anything I shouldn’t! Thank goodness, the voice left me in peace!
I was back in that coffee bar the other day. It was busy and the only free table was that one in the corner. I was minding my own business when an attractive young lady approached me and asked if she could share my table.
I heard a voice in my ear. A voice I knew only too well.
“I’m watching you,” it said.

Our conscience has that irritating way of whispering at the most in opportune time.

Thanks for pointing out I posted the wrong story earlier, I probably wouldn’t have noticed!

I love your stories Keith! That little voice in our ear is both a blessing and an annoyance. I love where the image took you!

Thanks, thanks and thanks again, Natasha!
Many years ago I self-published a little book called The Stranger and Other Short Stories and it did okay. It’s out of print now and I lost the only copy I had!

At least he has a conscience. Too many people don’t any more.

Good to have a conscience, but I wouldn’t want to hear it.
