A short story

for Friday Fictioneers

My 2,300th post!

.

.

He bought it from Bikea.  A self-assembly cycle!

He’s a put-it-together-yourself fanatic. His home’s filled with things he’s constructed. Some are a bit odd; upsidedown drawers, wonky chairs, a few sloping shelves.

Parts unpacked, instructions discarded, he got started. Three days, seven hours and twelve minutes later it was time for its maiden bikage.

He hopped on, peddled – and it went backwards! There were also some other problems but after another two days, six hours and five minutes hopefully it was sorted.

Unfortunately, it wouldn’t steer, refused to brake, the bell didn’t ding-a-ling.

Five days, seven hours and fourteen minutes passed …

    Dear Keith,

Oh no! No ringie dingie??? He reminds me of my Junior High Social Studies teacher. Poor man didn’t have a mechanical bone in his body. Once, while he was showing us a film in class, the spring that kept the reels together popped off and nearly clocked me. As always your story is delightfully entertaining.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

I would love to have witnessed that! It’s the kind of little thing that stays in your memory forever. Thanks for your kind words Rochelle.

haha! That’s hilarious! This’d be me if I tried to make a bicycle like this. Well done, Keith.

At least he keeps on trying so it’s worth all those occasional minor flops

Absolutely, by next week he may have it working! Cheers, Larry.

Sounds like it will be a long time before he rides.

You have to give him credit for his persistence. Reminds me of something else but the inappropriateness of it prevents me from saying what it is. I enjoyed the story very much.

Go on, whisper it to me … oh Lisa, you naughty lady!

Funny! I can just picture it. Me, being the one that opens a kit, looks at the finished pic and starts putting it together. Annoys the hell outa Hubby because my projects always work… he uses the instructions to built a simple bookcase, and the shelves end up upside down and wonky. Now, he just sets the kits and tool box in front of me and says to “Have at.” hehehe!

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings August 26, 2021 / 13:53

That’s really funny! Are you sure it’s not just a ploy to get him out of doing it?

      • Bear's avatar Bear August 26, 2021 / 13:58

Nope, I’m not sure. Sometimes I think it is. hehe!

Did you invent the word “bikea” Keith? Great word – you should copyright it. As for the assembly process, I have trouble assembling shoes with laces so can empathize.

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings August 26, 2021 / 13:37

I did, but I think IKEA might have something to say about that! As for shoelaces …!

Reminds me of an uncle who would disassemble items and then reassemble. Funny thing was, it never took as many parts to put anything back together. Thanks for the late night/early morning smile.

The pleasure’s mine Lorraine. He must have had a big collection of spare parts!

And you’ve been asking me, where my idea came from… I so love this! And I adore the idea of Bikea, I want it. It’d make travelling in the cities so much more fun.

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings August 27, 2021 / 08:45

That’s so kind of you. I’m with you on city biking!

  16. pennygadd51's avatar pennygadd51 August 26, 2021 / 22:10

Teehee! I wish I could understand how any conceivable failure-to-put-together a bicycle could lead to it being stuck in a wall 12 feet above ground. (Sigh) I don’t expect I’ll ever know…

Nothing surprises me where he’s concerned! Thanks, Penny.

I know this guy, he is a friend of my daughter. He managed to assembly the IKEA bed and the drawers wouldn’t fit correct underneath. I had to fix them and tell him that the instructions were probably wrong. What does she see in him? Great true story about the bike, by the way.
