Since we don’t have them here, I looked up sloes in my dictionary. The small, dark, round, astringent fruit of the blackthorn, a European spiny plum. Like the plums in the last picture? The third and fourth pics you’ve posted look like our chokecherries.

We know them as Elderberries in the UK – good for flavouring wine as are the flowers that came before them.

Hi Keith – the fruits out there do look amazing this year – and the recent rain will really help. Gorgeous photos – cheers Hilary

My Dad made sloe wine rather than gin. It was a beautiful colour and extremely potent.
Oh the memories of forging for these, elderberries (and previously elderflower for his champagne), blackberries and just about anything else he wanted to try his hand at!

I pick them all! Once the gin’s made it’ll be time for my Elderberry wine!

Do you enter shows Keith? My Dad did every year and had several first and second places. He began to concentrate on alcohol content and the judge lost his voice!!!!

You are not the first person to mention that! Perhaps I should!

I did enter a photo competition in the village fair a couple of years ago. I came third and the prize was 50p!

I won a hairdryer in a young girls comic competition in 1966. Mum was still using it in 2015.

Love autumn and the first chill of the changing season. Thank you for the photographs that bring memories of Autumn on the Weald.

No sloes here where I live in upstate New York. I recognize bramble fruits in some of the pictures . I’ve never had homemade sloe gin.

Fantastic series! I’m putting vegetables in the freezer, but making wine sounds more fun — and more warming in the winter. 🙂
