A theatrical tale…

for Friday Fictioneers

zzzzMy friend Rosey and I went to London to see our thespian mate Gascoigne in his latest Shakespearian role.

The curtains swept back, and there he was, poised to deliver a scene-setting soliloquy. Rosey decided to offer encouragement by yelling “Cock a leg Gaza”. Everyone turned and stared.

“What’s wrong?” she mouthed.

“You shouldn’t shout and anyway, the phrase starts ‘break’ not ‘cock!’” I whispered which started her giggling.

Unfortunately, the play was rather boring. I kept yawning and Rosey nodded off, but at the end, the audience applauded –  except Rosey who stuck two fingers in her mouth and whistled!

I can’t take her anywhere!

You should’ve known better than to let Rosey out for an evening at the theatre 🙂

I don’t agree with you. Going somewhere with Rosey is great fun! 🙂

Hi Keith – I hate to think what Rosey’d be like on the way home … especially if it was a train journey to our coast. I thought you were going to say she giggled her way through the show – and then got Gazza kicked out … fun story – cheers Hilary

She giggles her way through life! I decided not to take her to the tennis! Pleased you liked it Hilary

Fun to write too! I’ve posted over 100 stories about her to date and there are loads more to come! Thanks so much.

Is she based on some real person? She seems so alive! 🙂

Between you and me, she’s not! I’m not sure what that says about me!

That says ‘You’ve made a truly realistic and believable and 3 dimensional character’
        That’s so great!! <3 🙂

    Dear Keith,

Rosey seems like quite a character. 😉 Cute story.

Hilarious, Keith. At least Gaza knew he had the support and the audience applauded. An evening with Rosey certainly doesn’t sound boring. You’re right about not taking her to see tennis. Well written. 😀 — Suzanne

I have to admit my mobile phone rang during a big tennis match the other day – how embarrassing was that?

  13. draliman's avatar draliman June 27, 2019 / 15:50

You should have known that taking her to a Shakespeare play was just asking for trouble… reminds me of that opera scene in Pretty Woman 🙂

  14. pennygadd51's avatar pennygadd51 June 27, 2019 / 16:10

    Haha! Broad grin on face!
The solemnity of many productions of The Bard’s plays actively invites lampooning, don’t you think? I’m with Rosie – Cock a leg, Gazza!

Thanks Brenda. It’s not easy whittling down my Rosey tales to 100 words, so I’m pleased it worked okay!

Rosey has an abundance of energy and a unique sense of humour. She does not fit in regular crowd.

I just love it when people are real, and unpretentious. It’s so tempting sometimes to do something outrageous just to bring people back down to earth, but I usually resist. Three cheers for Rosie. Our local classical radio station had an ongoing discussion recently about the practice of not applauding between movements of classical pieces, and how it wasn’t always the rule.

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings June 29, 2019 / 09:07

I’ve never understood that practice, but there’s always someone who claps anyway – usually Rosey! Thanks Margaret.

I like Rosey. I think she’d find me as boring as the play, but I’d find her as entertaining as your story.

  23. James McEwan's avatar James McEwan June 29, 2019 / 12:32

Looks like Rosey was after Gascoigne’s attention with her enthusiastic reaction. “Hey, look I am over here.”
    Did she enjoy her sleep?

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings June 30, 2019 / 17:21

She did, but thanks to her snoring, those close to her certainly did not!

If I had my way, every story I write would be about Rosey, but I think my readers will find it a bit to much of a good thing!

      • Sascha Darlington's avatar Sascha Darlington June 30, 2019 / 18:13

One of the first short story writers I read was Ellen Gilchrist who wrote many, many short stories from youth to adulthood about a character name Rhoda. Maybe you should create an anthology. It might be fun seeing who Rosey was as a kid. I’m sure she has an interesting view on things.

I think I would get along with Rosey. I always do or say the wrong thing, and I’m never quite sure why it’s wrong. It’s good of you to explain her improprieties. People just shake their heads at me and never explain what I did wrong.

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings July 4, 2019 / 09:59
