Flash Fiction

Post 1627. Tuesday February 6

x

We had fun didn’t we, here on the beach. Remember how we ran into the sea and splashed and laughed and … laughed. Oh, how we laughed. Then we ran along shore leaving footprints in the sand, up and down and round and round, and played hopscotch and built castles and drew a heart and…

… and then the tide came in. Washed it all away as if we had never been there. Gone. Away.

The sea is still here, the beach, the sand, but not your footprints. Only mine. Just my footprints follow me … mine alone.

Alone.

That started off so happy and full of joy, and then… ah well. C’est la vie.

I could feel his piercing loneliness in your last lines.
    Great story, Keith.

That was definitely sad. On the other hand, the sea washes away everything in time.

You did a great job by conveying a feeling of almost childlike joy in the opening, then throwing an ice-bucket of sadness over us with very little warning. Nice writing Keith.

I’m pleased it came across that way, thank so much.

Sometimes one is alone and lonely even with another set of footprints. I treasure my solitude.

There is palpable sadness in this fine story,

There’s no aloneness more alone than the one that follows a great love. I feel sad for him. That’s some good writing when you can make me care for the character.

    Footprints are never permanent.

Time and the sea are both notorious for erasing things.
