Twinkle twinkle …

.

.

The street was busy, shoppers with bulging bags bustled their way along, some staring at mobile phones seemingly oblivious to others swirling around them. I couldn’t wait to get home.

It was then I saw her, sitting on the pavement, leaning against a post. She was small, with pale skin and long blonde locks, tears running down her cheeks. She had a distant look in her glassy eyes as she stared skyward. She was quietly singing to herself; ‘twinkle twinkle little star’.

I knelt and asked if I could help her. She stopped singing and stared into my eyes. I repeated myself, but got no response. I asked if she’d like a coffee. She nodded.

‘Twinkle twinkle little star’ she sang as I helped her to her feet. ‘I often go there’, she whispered. ‘The coffee bar?’ I asked. ‘No, to the little star’, she said as she stared to the sky..

I ordered a couple of coffees from the counter, but when I returned to the table, she’d gone. Oh well, I thought, looks like I’m drinking two cups.

Suitably refreshed, I walked back into the street. Across the road  I spotted a friend. I called out, and he waved. As I stepped off the kerb I became aware of a blaring car horns and screeching tyres.

Something unseen dragged me back, dropped me to the pavement and leaned me against a post – the post where I’d found the girl thirty minutes earlier. I was in of a daze.

People stopped and stared. They seemed to talk to me but I heard nothing. Nothing that is, except the ringtone of my mobile phone. Not the usual ringtone; it was twinkle twinkle little star. I took it from my pocket and looked at the screen. It was blank.

‘Twinkle twinkle little star’, I said, ‘how I wonder who you are’.

Oh my! This is such an intriguing story Keith. Did he die? Was she a ghost or did she saved him?

Well crafted fantasy! Hopefully the narrator can come back to earth and carry on.

Wow! This is a wonderful take on the prompt Keith. You took my mind to surreal and magical blended theme with a bit of the unexplained drama of twilight zone all in one. Bravo. Really awesome writing!!
