Let me read (and sing!) it to you!

Ever since seeing the famous television advert for Cornetto Ice Cream, Gordon fancied being a gondolier, or a ‘gongolier’ as he called it!

He was midway through a Mister Whippy cone with a chocolate flake the other day (he couldn’t find a Cornetto) when an overwhelming urge to become one washed over him, a gondolier not an ice cream, that is.

Gondolas are few and far between around here, but Gordon’s chum Charlie had a paddleboard, one of those things you stand on as you set out to sea, though why anyone would want to, I’ve never understood!

Dressed in a striped shirt and his Auntie Pat’s straw hat he stood at the water’s edge. The village pond wasn’t exactly a Venician canal but it would do. It was time to take punt*, excuse the pun!

Armed with the lenghty paddle, he stepped aboard the board, wobbled for a few seconds then stood to attention. A couple of ducks looked on, they thought he was quakers as did some  geese which were also having a gander! 

“Just one Cornetto, give it to me” he sang as he pushed himself away from bank. “Delicious ice cream, of Italy”.

It was going quite well until he reached the centre of the pond where the paddle got stuck in the mud down below! The board carried on its way leaving Gordon clinging on to the pole which slowly started to tilt!

The water was only knee deep, so he was able to splodge and splash his way to dry land, losing one of his shoes in viaggio as they probably don’t say in Italy!

Gordon remembered seeing another famous television advert ….

 

*By the way, ‘taking a punt’ is an Briish expression for having a go, and a punt is a flat bottomed boat, and not a reference to soccer!
