I may as well not be have been there. The only person I spoke with was the waiter.

Fork in one hand, his phone in the other. I moved his plate of food aside, he didn’t notice. You should have seen him prodding the table! I put it back then drank his wine. He said nothing, just scowled at me.

I messaged him, said we had to leave. The babysitter needed to go.

He actually spoke, ‘another blasted text’, he said. Didn’t read it though, he was otherwise engaged.

I’m on my way home now. Wonder if he’s noticed yet?

Good for you! I would think that slipping out is perfectly acceptable under these conditions.

    Technology isn’t always helpful.

Many a times- though we are so dependent on it that we can’t make do without it either

I love that the other slipped out, unnoticed… Wonder if they can move out with the same ease?

Surfing the phone when out to dinner with others is just plain rude. He either needs to get rid of his phone addiction or she needs to get rid of him. Time will tell… Good story, Keith. I like the visual of her moving the food and him jabbing at the table.

Excellent summary of where the importance of life has been replaced by a digital void.
My brother’s wife would text the children from the kitchen when dinner was ready. She didn’t seem to think this was an issue, modern life was her answer. REALLY. They brought their little device to dinner with them , the little darlings.
What happened to family bonding, preparing the meal together and talking to each other.

Oh my, that’s awful. Sadly, families rarely sit together at a table these days, with or without those wretched phones.

Sounds like there’s a bit of clutter building up—perfect time to rent a dumpster and start fresh!

That sounds like the worst date ever. I like the image of him prodding, unseen at the missing plate with his fork. Quite on point.

    Dear Keith,
Pretty sorry state of affairs when you have to text your partner to get his or her attention. Guilty as charged. But then back in the day I had to compete with the newspaper. It’s always something, isn’t it?
    Shalom,
    Rochelle
