It was another busy evening in The Baaamy Inn and Ted was telling his mates about the visit he made to the gift shop earlier in the day, “it’s my wife’s birthday soon and I needed a card, some wrapping paper and few other bits and pieces, well, the selection was pretty poor and I told the assistant how disappointed I was, and he said ‘in that case, leave my shop and go somewhere else’, so I told him I didn’t like the tone of his voice – he took a mouthful of helium from the balloon inflater and said exactly the same thing again but sounding like a chipmunk!”
Suzie came in, bought a drink from the bar and sat herself down at the next table, her skin had taken on a very different tone, it was orange and with her blonde hair she looked like a miniature version of a certain American gentleman; “they’ve just installed a spray tan booth at the gym so I thought I’d try it out, there were three buttons so you could choose how you’d like to look, I pressed button one assuming it was the palest, but it was actually the darkest, on the plus side, my boyfriend thinks my bum cheeks look good enough to eat!” – “OY” shouted Landlord Len, ”I won’t have you lowering the tone of this establishment”.
“I took part in the tanning olympics and got a bronze”, said Colin, “sunburned librarians are well red – there’s a tanning salon in Africa called Tans in ‘ere – when pigs are out in the sun they apply oinkment – the instructor at my gym advised me to wear loose clothes, I wouldn’t have joined the gym if I had any loose clothes – I attempted to exercise this morning but it didn’t work out – seven days without exercise makes one weak….”
“I saw that posh bloke and his ‘ole lady in town ‘tother day”, said Arthur, “ ‘watcha Tone’, I said, ‘what are you up to?’, well, his wife gave a dirty look and said, ’my husband’s name is Anthony and we about to partake of afternoon tea at the Crystal Empire Hotel, now come along my man, I’m in urgent need of a gin and tone-ic’ – ‘I’d rather be going to The Baaamy Inn with you’, Tone muttered my ear!”.
Arthur’s mobile phone suddenly came to life, it has an unusual ring tone, the National Anthem, and whenever it goes off he stands to attention before answering it, but before he had a chance to grab it, it vibrated its way across the table and ended up in Bab’s lap; “I say”, she said “there’s an incoming call from someone called Melicious, I wonder who that could be”; “it’s erm…she’s erm…”, spluttered Arthur, “never mind give it here”, and with that took the phone, cancelled the call and plonked himself down again!
Len likes to sing but he’s the first to admit he’s tone deaf and for that reason he waits till everyone has gone before he has a sing-song, one of his favourites is an old Irish song simply called Maggie – they say we have outlived our time Maggie, as dated as the songs that we’ve sung, but to me you’re as fair as you were Maggie, when you and I were young…..

That first encounter was a classic- I love how your mind works- I could certainly never duplicate it as I am nowhere near this quick.

not for nothin’ but if I come across a little bottle (that clearly fell out of that Carroll fellow’s briefcase) that has ‘Read Me’ on the label will send a dram. It’s worth a shot if it can restore all of us (here in the blogosphere) to the dimension we were in when first we sat down to type.

Wow! You’re attuned to tone! I especially enjoyed the relentlessly punny third paragraph.
