We’re creatures of habit, aren’t we? I used to catch the train to work every day. I’d stand at the same place on the platform, climb into the same carriage through the same door and sit in the same section. Others also. I’d recognise almost everyone on the daily journey we shared. Here’s the strange thing though, we never spoke or even acknowledged one another. We just sat there staring at phones, reading newspapers, dozing or simply staring from the window.

Today is the first time I’ve caught this train for years. I wondered what it would be like to relive something so trivial yet somehow interesting.

The scene’s not changed. The people are different, but they’re doing the same kinds of things. It’s like the old bods have morphed into new ones! Some are dressed smartly, presumably office workers, others casually just as they used to.

That’s different. There’s a couple over there having an intimate chat, giggling and pressing themselves up against each other. It‘s at times like this I wish I could lipread!

We’re here, the end of the line. A robotic voice will tell us to make sure we take all our possessions – there it goes, just like before! Off we get. We shuffle through the barrier and all head off in different directions – except the loving couple who’ve stopped for an embrace, blocking the way quite a few annoyed looking commuters!

I’d like to say I miss my daily commute. But I don’t. So I won’t

Nicely done, Keith! I am looking forward to no longer commuting!

Good take, Keith, and so true to life – we sure are creatures of habit.
I don’t miss my commute either, and it was only a ten minute walk, but ten minutes twice a day, five days a week over 14 years makes quite a lot of time saved. 😏

      Thanks, Jenne.

Ten minutes, twenty, sixty – a commute is a commute! Not something I miss at all.

I don’t miss commuting, but I had to drive so it was even more challenging, but I get the having to do it every day is still drudgery

Interesting observation of the people in your world but not of it, Keith.

And I wonder how much of our lives we spend waiting, not just for trains, but also to get there.

    And back.

I’m another ex-commuter who misses it not at all.

Several years, I imagine. I waited 20 minutes for a bus yesterday, more time wasted!

I have lived in places that had very competent public transport- and so enjoyed making use of it. Unfortunately, it is not very well plotted where I live now- and waiting for the bus at 40 below- you want to know the damn thing is running on time! I loved this Keith.
