Welcome back to The Baaarmy Inn where as usual, the ladies of the knitting circle are nattering and knittering whilst turning strands of wool into this that and the other, Polly was going at a hell of a rate, if her needles were metal there’d be sparks flying everywhere, “I’m practicing for a competition at the Women’s Institute”, she said, “the person that creates the most elaborate piece in just two hours wins, it called the Knitathon”; “knit a thong?” asked Mary, “that sounds a bit itchy!”
“I saw Archie the Archer the other day, he’s an interesting character”, said Babs, “he doesn’t just shoot arrows, he’s got lots of strings to his bow; he plays the violin and even demonstrates macramé, mind you, I think he takes on too much, he always seems a bit highly strung”.
“I remember the time Archie and I got stranded in a boat”, said Ted, “things were going well until we found ourselves in shallow water and we became stuck, Archie began to panic, I told him it was hardly the Titanic then did what any sailor would do in such a situation – I stood up and shouted dot-dot-dot dash-dash-dash dot-dot-dot, that’s morse code for save our sausages or something, but there wasn’t a soul around so we decided to climb out and wade back to the shore, thankfully the village pond was quite shallow”.
“Talking of stranded”, said Arthur, “the missus dragged me to the supermarket yesterday, we were going down the dessert aisle when she deserted me, told me to wait there with the cart while she nipped back to get something, well, she was gone ages so I thought I’d better try looking for her, unfortunately the trolley was one of those that has a mind of its own and refuses to go in a straight line, it was like driving a dodgem car, anyway, I went round a corner and bumped into her, literally, I got such a telling off!”
“I got stranded on a dessert island, it was delicious”, said Colin, “I can row a boat, canoe? – if you get stranded in the desert you won’t starve because of the sand which is there – I got stranded on a island with red sand, red grass and red trees, I was marooned – pirates measure rope in yarrr’ds – the string wouldn’t go through the eyes of a needle because it was afreyed – string theory might be the answer to everything, then again it might knot – the DNA strand asked if genes made him look fat……”
Len’s dearly departed Maggie used to knit, in fact the knitting circle was her idea, he still wears things she made him; she also created several of the cushion covers in the bar, one of which was supposed to resemble her face, it wasn’t much of likeness but now and again when Len looks at it and smiles, he’s certain it smiles back!

not to be a knit-picker* but the line that made me laugh best was:
“if you get stranded in the desert you won’t starve because of the sand which is there”
(Don’t tell anyone, but I had to read it twice to get the humor… but worth it)
*might not be entomologistically correct use of the word… but I hear the internet is passing a law that everyone who writes should start to make up words… that way the people who use AI to pretend to write will be caught out with their panz down!
