My mate Brian comes out with the most ridiculous stories! The other day he was telling me about a family of mischievous imps that lives in the wood beside the lake. They normally keep themselves to themselves, but when there’s full moon they love to come out and play.

I should know better than to believe his silly tales by now, but he has this ability to enter your brain and get you to accept them as true! He even persuaded me to go to the wood with him last night so I could see them for myself.

By the light of a lantern we slowly made our way between the trees, trying to remain as quiet as possible. At the waters’ edge we came across a fallen branch and sat ourselves down. From his pocket he produced a little wooden whistle; he gave it to me and said that if I tried playing a tune on it, the imps would appear and merrily dance before us.

He extinguished the lantern. Above us, the moon shone down through the tree’s naked branches. I put the whistle to my lips and blew a few notes. It was then I realised that Brian had disappeared. I was all alone.

Imagine my surprise when I suddenly saw three white-faced creatures crawling towards me through the undergrowth. They started bombarding me with pine cones. I froze!

I admit that as practical jokes go it was a pretty good one. But it’ll cost Brian, Paul and Simon a pint each in the pub tonight!
