In this week’s Unicorn Challenge prompt photo, the cat’s contended expression took my mind back to a tale I wrote in 2015. I thought I’d have a go at telling the story in a slightly different way. This is the result!

She was accident prone, but somehow always escaped unscathed. Catherine was known as Cat to her friends. ‘You’ve got nine lives’, they used to say as she recovered from yet another brush with death.
This time however, it was somewhat more serious. She was about to start washing dishes having enjoyed an evening entertaining friends when she slipped and fell to the kitchen floor, leaving her with a dreadful injury to her head.
*
Her anxious family gathered around the hospital bed. They were warned to expect the worst, but they didn’t want to believe it, surely, she still had more lives to go.
When Cat’s eyes slowly closed, their grief was overwhelming. ‘It’s not over yet’, she thought as she drifted away.
*
The window was ajar. A kitten crept through the narrow gap and leapt from the sill to a bench. She carefully picked her way between the pots and pans still waiting to be cleaned.
‘I said it wasn’t over,’ she purred as she licked clean a plate.

I have always joked that I want to come back as a tiger. I guess a pampered cat would be okay, too.
They are probably the most pampered creaures on earth!
I like the happy ending
Me too, we need more happiness right now.
Very true my friend
What a wonderful story, Keith! Love every part of it.
That’s so kind of you Dale, thank you!
I say what I means. 😊
I love a twist, and this was a twisty tail indeed~ love it!
Haha, I like what you did there! Thanks, Jodi
See, that’s what I don’t like about cats – you just never can tell.
There’s a cat on the road here who looks at me just the way a former unpleasant boss used to!
But in your story it’s a happy ending, and as you say, we need as much of that as we can get these days.
Lovely story, Keith.
I’d love to know what goes on in their minds! I’m pleased you liked my little tale, Jenne – all together now…
Neat!
…as is your nice comment! Thanks, Di!
Woa! I did not see that end coming…well done Keith. You are the master of suspense and plot twists.
Thanks so much, Suzette. One tries one’s best!
Well done!
Nicely done!
Thank you, Mimi!
Very sweet, Keith!
Thanks so much, Chris.
You cannae whack a wee bit reincarnation to keep the cat people happy!
Purrfect ending, me-ow friend!
Well, twiddle me whiskers, that’s really nice of you!
Oh, what a lovely story, Keith. Now, let’s all sing “Happy.” 🙂
Sweet! Much nicer ending than what happened to librarian Michelle Pfeifer in the batman movie. Meow.
