Never mind

Even when they were kids he had a crush on her. He never told her though, he was very shy. He still does and still is.

They’ve remained casual friends. He’s dropped lots of hints in her direction over the years, but to no avail. He always smiles broadly when he sees her, he even winked at her once. She gave him a very odd look!

Every year he sends her a Valentine’s Day card, but the tradition of leaving it unsigned does him no favours whatsoever.

It’s February the fourteenth today – well, it is if you are reading this on Friday – and as well as a card he’s sent her some roses, anonymously of course. This morning he eagerly sought through his junk mail in the hope of finding a card from her. He did get one, but he recognised the writing to be that of his sister. She always sends him one so he dosen’t feel unloved; she’s no idea he knows!

He popped into the garden, picked a flower and plucked its petals – ‘she loves me, she loves me not, she loves me …’, it didn’t end well!

Feeling somewhat downcast, he thought a nice cup of cappuccino might just raise his spirits so off he went to the coffee bar.

You’ll never guess who he saw sitting there, all alone! Actually, you probably have – it was her! He bravely approached her and offered to buy her a cake. How romantic was that?  She accepted his offer.

It was time for him to be the man he wasn’t and reveal the  smouldering passion within his beating heart. He admitted to sending her a card. He told her the roses were from him.

She told him how sweet that was, then asked him why. ‘Because … I love you’, he muttered.

‘Sorry, I didn’t quite hear you, what did you say?’, she asked.

Unfortunately his daring deserted him. ‘Never mind’, he said.

She stood to leave, ‘thanks for the cake and the flowers you’ve always been a great friend, but I have to go,  I need to get ready for my party’.

‘How exciting’, he said, ‘what’s the party in aid of?’

‘My engagement, must dash, bye!’

Well maybe it’s best she didn’t hear him after all. Clever write!

Some things perhaps are not meant to be. Or, he waited too long to reveal his heart. Great story Keith!

Aww, that’s sad for him. But perhaps he’ll find someone who loves him too. Thanks for joining in.
