A short story …

I’ve been sweeping these streets for years. It’s not the most glamorous job in the world but it’s a lot more interesting than sitting in a stuffy office or stacking shelves in a supermarket.

I see all sorts of things, earlier today whilst sweeping South Street I saw a guy leaving number twenty two. I thought little about it until a couple of hours later when I spotted the same chap exiting number sixty nine North Street. He looked this way and that then hopped in his car and sped off. I sometimes think I could have a sideline as a private detective!

You’d be surprised how many coins I find in gutters. Usually just pennies, but sometimes more valuable ones turn up. Last week I made one pound, twenty six! My fellow Broom Boys and I pool our monetary gains and use it to have an occasional sweepstake on the horses. We won once!

Amongst other things, I’ve found a mobile phone in East Street, some sunglasses, a packet of peanuts, a teddy bear, a shoe, goodness knows how many kid’s dummies and even a pair of frilly knickers in West Street!

I’m telling you this is because I have some fantastic news to share. I’ve been promoted, and I’m now the Boss of the Brooms!

I’m determined to make a difference, after all they do say a new broom sweeps clean!

Only Fools and Horses was a long running comedy show in the UK and one of the funniest moments was when street-sweeper Trigger said he’d used the same broom for over 20 years – it had had 17 new heads and 14 new handles!

What a pleasant chap! I think those who look down on broom pushers need to have a chat with him!

    Capo delle scope!”

The engaging narrative voice of your story left me no choice but to employ google translate.

    <del>Seize</del> Sweep the day!

With an attitude like that, this broom boy is going places.
I see it now: the blockbuster book and movie – Revelations of a Broom Boy!
    Keep in with him, Keith.

I was on the edge of my parrot waiting for the Trigger reference!

Entertaining as ever, me ol’ bristle, but I want to know more about Fred the Philanderer from South to North Streets.

Or is he Sammy the Spy, Harry the Hitman, or Theo the Thief?

Touch of Chekhov’s gun about this, I think.

      Now you’ve got me wondering!

Chekhov’s gun, an interesting thought. I try never to  make false promises in my narrative by including extemporaneous details that will not ultimately pay off by the conclusion (thank you Google!)

Good old Trigger – RIP Roger LLoyd Pack.

Wonderful write as always Keith. The work of those who tend to the street deserve respect. Well done.

Indeed they do, I often watch them from my window and wonder what it must be like to push a broom all day.

Like me with cleaning houses, they always need cleaning again, he has job security, the streets will always need sweeping. Fun story!
