There were fourteen of us sitting in a circle at the book club this morning. That’s not strictly true because there where actually fifteen bodies present, but I don’t include Betty because she fell asleep a few minutes in. She often does that!
We did all the usual things. We gave our thoughts on the nominated novel, discussed its highs and lows, even suggested ways in which it could be improved. Some of us loved it, some of us quite liked it, some of us were unimpressed and it sent one of us off to the land of nod!
Towards the end of the session we woke Betty up and reminded her it was her turn to make coffee. Whilst she was busy in the kitchen we did what we always do at that time, we get someone to open the book at a random page and read the first few words. The person to their right adds to the sentence with few made up words of their own, followed by their neighbour, then theirs, and theirs, and theirs … you get the drift!
Robert was chosen to set things off. He open the book and starred open-mouthed at the page. “Oh, I’m unsure about this, ‘tis neither the time nor the place to be considering things of an erotic nature”.
“Why not, there’s never a wrong place, you are a man, show me what you are made of!” uttered an excited Gillian, who’s broad grin suggested she was very pleased with her augmentation.
“No, stop,” said Robert, “they were my first thoughts on reading the words, not the first words I read. I wish to find something more appropriate”.
However, his plea went unheeded and Phylis joined in.
“As you wish, he said, come here you vixen, I’m not known as the silver fox for nothing!”
Then it was Humphrey’s turn, he jumped to his feet and uttered what could only be described as a lascivious addition!
Modesty prevents me from telling you more, suffice to say it became somewhat raunchy! So much so, that a shocked Betty dropped a tray of cups and saucers to the floor, the crash of which brought the proceedings to climatic halt!

Sounds like my kind of book club!!
I might just start one!
Bummer one cannot participate from the other side of the pond 😉
Oops! Sounds like the book was from adult fiction!!!!
A hilarious story. Thanks for joining in.
I’m pretty sure it was, I was worried I might have over-stepped the family-friendly rule!
It was okay! 👍🏼
That’s hilarious, dear Keith. Sounds like my kind of club! 😂
Mine too, Nancy, thanks so much.
My book club was never like that! Fun read Keith.
Nor mine, Di! I’m pleased you enjoyed it!
🙂
Sounds like a great game for wannabe writers! Obviously, a reader needs be choosy which “first few words” his eyes settle on. But poor Robert didn’t stand a chance with that lot.
If only he’d said nothing and turned to another page! But then I’d not have had a story to tell!
The visuals on this are priceless. And hearing you read it! Chef’s kiss!
That’s so kind of you, Violet, thank you.
What a great piece, Keith! I loved hearing you read it. It added so much more to the humor of the story.
