So cold

It was cold. So cold, I swear saw a snowman shiver.

Every breath was painful, it was the coldest winter’s night I’d ever known. I walked down the twisting lane heeding every step lest I slip on the carpet of snow beneath my feet.

Grassy banks stood rigid and snow topped hedgerows sparkled in the moonlight. Skeletal trees wove a border of lace twixt a glistening field and the grey winter’s sky above.

The shadow of a man, head bowed, kept me company. My shadow.

I trudged into the village. There was not a soul to be seen. Six disgruntled ducks stood motionless on a frozen pond. All was quiet but for the crunching of the snow beneath my boots.

I turned a corner and saw a distant golden glow. As I trudged towards it, the sound of merriment and laughter filled the air,  quietly at first and then more loudly.

I had arrived. I pushed open the heavy oak door and  my spirits rose amid the sounds, smells, and warmth of the ancient inn.

“Mine’s a brandy landlord, and make it a large one!”

Brilliant storytelling as always, Keith. You had me going along in the cold with you as you walked…Your descriptives of the cold are (for me) totally relatable…Bravo!

What a poetic prose, Keith! Nothing like the warmth of a pub filled with friends.
