We always thought that one day he’d work within a university. Pete the Prof we used to call him!
I can still hear him correcting our teacher’s mistakes. He was more in charge of proceedings than they were.
“Please Sir, I believe you’ve spelled that word incorrectly”.
“Please Miss, I think you’ll find that India has twenty-two languages, not twenty-one”.
“Please Sir, in the interest of our health, I’d prefer it if you’d sneeze into a handkerchief to prevent the spread of germs.
“Please Miss, this is all very interesting but I think it’s worth mentioning that the Bayeux Tapestry is incorrectly named as it is in fact an embroidery”.
Hardly a day went by in the staff room without the teachers admitting to eachother the slip ups they’d made only to be corrected by Pete!
He was a sucker for tidiness too. He often stayed behind to make sure the blackboard was perfectly wiped. He’d neaten the teacher’s desk and make sure there was not a scrap of detritus (his word, not mine!) soiling the floor before leaving.
We were right! He gained a position within an esteemed educational establishment in Cambridge, a university that is highly regarded througout the world.
Not as a professor though. No, he’s a cleaner.
But not any old cleaner it seems! According to him, he’s responsible for purification, sanitation, sterilization, ablution, antisepsis, deodorising, disinfection and prophylaxis … whatever that is!

Pete didn’t live up to his full potential it seems- or perhaps it was his dream job after all. Thanks for joining in Keith. 😂

Wonderful to see the word “detritus” in a sentence!! That is not that common. Nice one Keith. His job sounds fabulous when you put it like that…good on him! It is all perspective.
