As I’m sure you know, I used to run a pub – I’ve mentioned it often enough! Well, I thought it was about time I took you for a look around The Brewers Arms and introduced you to some of my regulars, particularly as my Thursday tales about The Baarmy Inn are often inspired by them! If you’re expecting a quiet drink in a sophisticated tavern, forget it!

I can’t believe I gave it up 18 years ago, it still feels like yesterday.

A bite to eat?

.

.

Round the corner in the restaurant section, there was a snug where the walls and ceiling were covered in crockery!

.

St George’s Day!

.

What can I get you? That’s my lovely daughter by the way.

.

I held a regular Irish Night. Seamus came along to entertain us!

.

We also held quizzes, jazz sessions, darts matches, karaoke  – you name it we did it!

Here are a few of the regulars – and me!

.

They liked climbing on the bar and the tables. Odd lot!

We often ended the evening with a dance. Some took it seriously, some didn’t! Watch where you’re putting your hand, young man!

.

The dress code wasn’t exactly strict!

I once laid on a school night – I was the headmaster of course!

.

.

.

We often had live music in the pub’s field…

.

…hog roasts too! The elderly lady, Miss T, owned a pub in the next village, but she left her staff to run it and came to me for lunch every single day!

.

If you were naughty you ended up in the stocks!

.

I had a page in the local area’s monthly magazine to keep people up to date with what was going on!

.

I have a framed copy of this on my wall to remind me of the wonderful time I had there!

.

It’s still running, but not in the style it was. The clutter that gave the place character has all gone. The decor’s plain and the atmosphere’s dull. Such a shame.

Thanks, Sadje, I got quite emotional compiling it!

I can imagine. It’s a part of your life that you enjoyed

A wonderful history. Hubby and I would love to join you for a pint or two.

Thank you for hosting the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday and rest of the week, Keith. 🙂

Oh, what fun! These peeps really know how to party down! I love the clutter and busy-ness; it’s all part of the unique charm. And that menu is fantastic! Do you miss the place, Keith? I bet you do and have a ton of stories to tell! 🥳

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings November 15, 2024 / 10:38

I really miss it, but it was really hard work! It was a pub of two parts, that was the crazy side and round the corner was the restaurant area where everything was normal! Stories? Where do I start?

      • Nancy (The Sicilian Storyteller)'s avatar Nancy (The Sicilian Storyteller) November 15, 2024 / 12:35

It’s obvious you derived a lot of pleasure from the place and also added a lot of your natural charm and humor. Sounds like the perfect pairing. You’re a fortunate man, Keith!

      • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings November 15, 2024 / 12:42

I had to give it up eventually, I was exhausted! I then opened a bistro in a theatre district which was frequented by celebrities. That was fun too!

That’s so much fun to see! I paid £7 for a pint of Speckled Hen in London a few weeks ago. Is that £2.50 for a half?

    • Misky's avatar Misky November 12, 2024 / 18:51

And you have horse brasses! Proper!

      • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings November 13, 2024 / 16:58

Well spotted Misky, actually I had lots of them. Being in a rural village a couple of miles from a main road, quite a few folk arrived on horseback, especially at weekend – one even used a pony and trap!

They are pint prices – but that was 20 years ago!

Great memories of a great place. It looks like a lot of fun was had there. Love it. Thanks for sharing it.

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings November 15, 2024 / 12:24

There certainly was! It’s a very different place now though.

  10. CatSynth's avatar CatSynth November 13, 2024 / 16:27

Oooh, that looks like fun. I would definitely stop for a drink there!

I’d be very the very obvious exotic foreigner, but that’s part of the fun.

“They liked climbing on the bar and the tables. Odd lot!”

Odd lot? Taking after the guy who ran the place maybe? (I mean that in a nice way!) I love the decorations in the place as well as the exterior vines. I’m not a drinker, but I could have spent time in this place and felt like I belonged. The guy under the “Buffet Tonight” sign looks like Peter Falk and the guy giving the finger to the camera kind of looks like a pro-wrestler. Do I want to know what Bubble ‘n Squeak is?

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings November 14, 2024 / 21:35

Thanks, Michael! That’s Pete, now you come to mention it he does! He was the village carpenter and he made the stocks for me!

Bubble and squeak, that’s mashed potatoes mixed with mashed sprouts and onions then pressed down in an oiled frying pan and cooked till it gets a nice brown crust both sides. It bubbles and squeaks!

I loved this! You and your customers all had a wonderful time and it is the way a good pub should be. The prices on the menu board, those days are long gone!

I wish more pubs were like that! As for prices, beer has doubled since then!

It looks like a place people loved to visit for a good time and all the clutter gave it the personality but it was probably hard to keep it all up and looking good. What a fun time in your life that you miss, but I’m sure all the hours and work which provided you with happiness are also very tiring. Sometimes it is best to leave on a high note and start something new with life.

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings November 15, 2024 / 12:36

It was hard work, seven long days a week! I went on to run a bistro, but that’s another story!

Hi Keith – how amazing to see your happenings … loved seeing behind the scenes – thank you … yes 18 years ago … was about when I started my blog – and I left my squash club cavorting days 30+ years ago behind in SA … memories … these are just wonderful to see – and what I’d do for something similar now – nostalgia .. I guess. Cheers and such fun to see … cheers Hilary

Thanks Hilary, where does the time go?

I like to look back now and again – pubs aint like that anymore!
