They are like best mates, Mac and his mandolin!
He’s got a ukulele, but he’s not keen on it. A guitar too, but he’s never got the hang of it. But the day he came across the mandolin, it struck a chord with him. He liked the look of it, the sound of it!
He seizes every opportunity to perform whether sitting on a park bench or standing on a street corner.
There’s one problem I’ve never dared mention to him though. He’s not very good at playing it. He had a problem from day one when he discovered it had eight strings, quite a challenge to someone with four clumsy fingers and a wonky thumb. He decided to use just three of them! How he’d tackle a harp’s forty-seven strings, I can’t imagine!
He sings too. He sure can hold a note! Unfortunately though, it’s rarely the right one!
Why am I telling you this? Well, some mates and I were in a busy pub garden one evening when along came Mac and his mandolin, or M&M as they’re known. A hush came over the place. Billy took that as a complement! He could wait to get going!
As his fingers danced up and down the mandolin’s neck like a spider on speed he started singing … something. He looked thrilled as people began rising to their feet, his first ever standing ovation! Or was it?
Sadly not, they started walking away and entering the bar.
How sad.

True story? Fun one, either way.
Absolutely not! I’m delighted you enjoyed it, both ways!
Awwww
That’s what I thought, Beth!
Charming, good-natured and with a lot of heart … just like the author! Lovely!
You say the nicest things, Nancy, heartfelt thanks.
Most sincerely welcome, dear Keith.
Well done Keith. Sometimes one has to play the music that one loves, audience or no. Amen.
Exactly!
tough crowd
but, nearly axiomatic about performance (musical, theatrical, blogical)… if you can’t take the risk, the reward will forever be out of reach
Aint that just true!
Haha good one, Keith. I admire his confidence!
At least he tried! Thanks, Shweta.
Poor mandolin! Can no one save it from Mad Mac?
I somehow doubt it!
He has the desire but not the “chops” as would be said here.
I’ve not heard that expression before – I like it!
One must admire his commitment. 😂
Indeed, but I can’t help but feel sorry for his long-sufferring mandolin!
😥
‘It struck a chord with him’ – groan – but it’s a good one!
Poor old Mac – somebody should take him aside and tell him.
Or no, wait…
Have a whipround and get him some singing lessons?
Love the tongue-in-cheek tone, Keith, you do it so well.
That’s a great idea in theory, but think we might have difficulty in finding a tutor to take him on!
Thanks so much for your generous words. Jenne, they are much appreciated.
Hahaha — great story. I think I’ve heard Mac’s cousin busking in the city.
Thanks, Sally, I feel so sorry for you!
(Sad trombone!) Some people won’t take a hint, and move on to what they were really meant to do!
