I was thinking – don’t laugh, I do now and again – what fun I could have if I was a shadow! I’m certain mine would rather have a mind of its own.
The other day I plonked myself down on a bench on the way back from the shops, and I saw my shadow staring up at me. I waved to it, and it waved back. I tried jerking my arm in an attempt to catch it out, but it jerked its arm back at me.
If I was a shadow, I would deliberately do something different from my human friend now and again. I could remain still when he moved. I could move when he was still. I could make rude gestures at him with my fingers! I could try tripping him up!
I think shadows get a bum deal. They have no choice about when they appear. That’s down to sun during the day and lamp posts at night. I’d want more freedom to come and go as I pleased.
I was walking along a street the other day and my poor shadow was flat on the ground one second, climbing a wall the next, then back on the ground again. Up, down, up, down, up down, it must have been so exhausting.
I bet shadows wish they could break free when they spot an attractive shadowess, they must have feelings too.
I’m going to stop thinking now. I beg your pardon? How dare you!
