One of the biggest days in The Baaarmy Inn’s calender will soon be arriving, the annual race day when the regulars, and others beside, gather to experience this breathtaking event, last year you could have cut the tension with a knife as the leaders headed for the finishing line, the winner beating its nearest rival by a slimy nose, yes, it’s The Snail Race!
Punters place bets, and those that put their cash on the speediest snail take a share of the prize fund, less the amount left after what Landlord Len calls his ‘organiser fee’, and the least successful gamblers share a tin of escargot in garlic butter!
Len had spent ages producing a poster advertising the Snale Race (spelling was never his strong point!) and as he proudly attempted to put it on display, the notice board crashed to the floor, the nail on which it hung, somewhat precariously it has to be said, parted company with the wall.
Having collected his hammer from behind the bar (he keeps on there ‘just in case’, though in case of what, I’ve no idea) he attempted the reinsert the naughty nail, but his first bash missed, the second sent it flying into the air, and his third attempt hit the nail, but unfortunately it was the one at the end of his thumb.
Arthur offered to have go, ‘atTACK it’ said Colin, ‘PINg’ it said Maisy ‘SHMASH it’, slurred slightly sozzled Suzie, but unfortunately he failed to nail it, ‘we need a bigger hammer’ said Oddjob Jack, ‘I’ll fetch mine’; ‘you mean your jackhammer’ joked Jim!
Jack produced an enormous nail from his toolbox, held it in position then raised his massive hammer above his shoulder; ‘all together now’ he said, ‘three, two, one’…
. …then there was a shower of sparks, a loud crackling noise, and all the lights went out, The Baaarmy Inn was plunged into darkness!
.

…but not until I return from my trip in a couple of week’s time.

Thanks to Denise at GirlieOnTheEdge for hosting Six Sentence Stories where this week’s given word is Nail.

Oops! Don’t bodes well for the competition 😅

I don’t know if my previous comment is showing up 5 times for you like it is on my end – but that isn’t the end of what all went wrong – I had intended to include a second sentence saying: “and his third attempt hit the nail, but unfortunately it was the one at the end of his thumb” made me literally laugh out loud.

Thanks, Nicole, not just for your lovely comments but also for your perseverance! Not only did it land here 5 times (I reduced it to 1) but also 21 times in my spam folder!
