Since adopting her kitten a few months earlier, it had become her constant companion, but suddenly it was gone; she held its collar to her cheek and broke down, sobbing uncontrollably.

She stumbled to the door, her legs buckling beneath her, flung it open, staggered outside and called its name, over and over again … and then her worst fear was realised.

Amid the trampled daffodils lay the motionless creature, her precious kitten, she collapsed to the ground and stroked it and though it felt felt warm, there was no sign of life.

She scraped and burrowed the ground, laid its limp body in the hollow, and covered it’s silky white fur with pitch back earth, then lay there with her head In her arms, unable to move, unable to think for what seemed like hours.

She sat up with a start, she had to get away, he’d be back and next time it would be her.

Over the years she’d had little contact with her parents, he hadn’t allowed it and somehow persuaded her she didn’t need them, but things had changed and she began to regret it, and so it was they were reunited and she moved back into the room she loved as a child, with a promise that they’d always be there protect her.

Darn! I missed Parts 3,2 and1. So I went back and read Parts 3,2, and 1 and in that backwards manner. And I thought to myself, ” How clever is Keith. He can write a story that makes just as much sense reading it backwards as it does reading it forwards.”
So guess I will wait for 6 before reading 5.

I don’t mind taking the trouble as long as I can make a little trouble along the we. 🙂

    Dude!*

    Most excellent installment.

    * compliment on a thoroughly engaging Six that no Reader worth their internet connection can read without the twinge of vicarious loss.

This is not boding well for the rest of the family.

Excellent episode, I’m left sad and angry about the treatment of a cat which only exists in a story.

With the death of the kitten the tale has taken an ominous turn. I can see why she might be concerned.

She’s safe at last, but I still have two episodes to work on and I’m yet to decide on the outcome!

She’d better watch out. “He” may go for broke and burn the parents’ house down. You’ve created a monster, Keith, now you’ll have to figure out how to deal with him. Bwa-ha-ha.

Oh, this did indeed get dark… Not that I wasn’t expecting it to, but the kitten’s death still hit hard, and very effectively showed the stakes of the story.

Damn, Keith! No, no happy ending. I applaud you for going to that place of shock, the place that saddens the reader yet ultimately keeps us engaged and wanting more. Excellent Six mini-series.
