“A bicycle? Seriously? At your age?”

“Why not Bessie, I’m as fit as a fiddle”.

“Oh, fiddlesticks, Fred. Get yourself a mobility scooter like mine”.

“No way, and anyway, it’s too late. I’ve ordered myself a city bike. It’s a handsome beast in a fetching shade of royal blue. It has three gears to help with climbing hills, a chainguard to protect my trousers and even a basket in which to carry my maps and other cycling essentials”.

.

Fred was really proud of his purchase and couldn’t wait to get going. Bessie insisted on accompanying him on his first trip. She packed some bottled water and a box of bandaids just in case!

After a couple of attempts, he managed to swing his leg over the crossbar. He stood astride his machine, adjusted his helmet, wriggled his bum to and fro to get the feel of the saddle and he was ready for the off.

Bessie travelled alongside him as he pedalled his precious bicycle. Becoming more confident, he decided to try some stunts!

“Look Bessie, no feet!”

“Be careful Fred”.

“Look Bessie, no hands”.

“Don’t be stupid Fred”.

“Look Bessie, no teeth,” he said as he struggled to climb from a ditch!

.

Fred is proud of his new mobility scooter. A handsome beast in a fetching shade of silver with a rack on which to carry his crutches.

Isn’t it the truth that one imagination of abilities sometimes is more than one can comfortably manage. Wonderful storytelling, Keith. I enjoyed your audio. You sure got into the characters’ voices, rather convincingly, I think!!

He should have listened to Bessie. Sometimes I too feel like I still can ride a bike! One day I’ll try 😂

I’d have to borrow my younger brother’s bike and lived in another city. But one day, I will at least try it. Just to test the saying that one never forgets how to ride a bike!

Thanks, Nancy! He may have had false teeth in which case there’s a chance he’ll find them. They’ll want a good clean though!

I will stick with my walk-abouts. Haven’t been on a bike in years.

While the adage insists bicycle riding is a skill we never lose… the mind itself apparently does not offer such a warranty

I wonder if that’s true. I’m going to give it a go and hope for the best!

My only disappointment in your fun tale is that Rosie didn’t feature.
I imagine she’d be catastrophic on two wheels!

    Love the voices, Keith!
And the undoing of Fred made me laugh.
    So nicely constructed too.

Nice audio work, Keith. And I was chuckling all the way through. Well done, as usual.

Lucky Bessie was there with the bandaids. I’m glad Fred ‘s accepted his limitations now and is just as excited about his new mobility scooter. I enjoyed these two – lots of fun.
