One hundred words

for Friday Fictioneers which is hosted as per usual by Rochelle!

A timely prompt as in less than two weeks’ time I will under canvas myself!

I ventured into the woods and found myself a sun-dappled clearing. After an hour or so of hammering pegs and tugging guy lines, I stood back and smiled.

I’d abandoned the hubbub of city life and embraced nature, just humming bees, hopping rabbits and scurrying squirrels for company.

Later in the day, after watching the sun go down, I retired for the night, the only sound being the calming hoot of a distant owl.

When dawn broke I emerged from my canvas chrysalis and thought to myself this is heaven on earth … until the heavens opened I got drenched!

That’s the risk of going camping.

Keith, I love “canvas chrysalis.” Camping is a beautiful experience — in theory.

Enjoy your upcoming camping adventure. Brilliant phrase ” canvas chrysalis!”

I can’t tell you how many camping trips have ended just like this for Donn and me. Still, we gird our loins and go out just because of the peace you have described. The only downfall is that since Covid SO many people have decided that the great outdoors is THE place to be. Pook!

It’ll take more than rain to put me off! I’ve noticed the increase too. Cheers, Alicia.

Here, local just over the river in Indiana, a storm struck up and a tree fell on a tent. Everyone had minor injuries… so I suppose you could be thankful just to get drenched. Great story.

I’ll bear this in mind when choosing my pitch in a couple of weeks’ time (pun unintended!)

Here, we live in tornado valley, so to say. I’m always careful when pitching my camp to be aware of conditions of trees around me. But this past year, we’ve had such a wet spring that the ground is saturated, and even healthy trees are falling in just a small gust. Be careful, my friend, and happy camping! 🙂 <3

We ended up in a tent for a while in 2007 and got fed up with being rained out. We bought a caravan in the end and true to form, the sun came out!

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings July 6, 2023 / 11:43

Sod’s law! I’ll stick with my tent and take my chance!

We had months of it as we’d sold our house and our temporary accommodation didn’t work out. We dried out on our friend’s lawn a few times.

Oh, isn’t it nice to pack a wet tent when you want to move on? I fondly remember hiking trips with lots of rain. These days though we could do with more rain.

    • Keith's Ramblings's avatar Keith's Ramblings July 8, 2023 / 14:23

Trying to pack a wet tent is my worst nightmare! We need some rain too, it’ll probably appear in two weeks’ time when I’ll be camping!

      • GHLearner's avatar GHLearner July 8, 2023 / 14:25

It always used to rain when I was on vacation but not any more. I would welcome it, I guess that’s why it stays away. 😉

    Dear Keith,

You remind me of a family camping trip that ending with torrential rains and wind bringing our tents down around us. Love your take on the prompt as always.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

Thanks so much, Rochelle. Exactly that happened to me on one occasion. I spent the night sleeping in my car!

I like the ‘canvas chrysalis’. You’ve set the scene beautifully. Nicely done! And yes, the unpredictability of camping.

You should’a read the Heavens manual, where in page 5, paragraph 6, in the small print notes it say “Prone to rain. No refund for drenching.” 🙂

Love it Keith (I missed last week as I was on holiday typical!) this is around the back of our old house, brother and a mate camped out there while clearing it, I think he was harking back to his youth 😅
