Daniel enjoyed spending time with Frederick. Often they would wander around the marina together stopping now and again to say hello to people aboard their yachts. How they wished they could set sail together!
Frederick loved to talk about his years in the Royal Navy, and how he climbed through the ranks from cadet to captain. He told tales of battles, and near-death experiences during the war. He was a decorated hero and often let Daniel see his medals. Despite all he’d encountered he so missed his life at sea.
Daniel was a fearsome pirate who made his enemies walk the plank. He told Frederick about his trips to an island where he dug for buried treasure. How he sat in the heat of his campfire singing pirate songs and drinking pop. Sometimes he’d meet Frederick wearing an eye patch and his three-pointed hat! He hoped that one day his mother would get him a parrot!
Frederick passed away ten years ago and left Daniel a gold medal stitched to a sliver of cloth from his uniform. He would have been very proud, for today Daniel starts a career in the Royal Navy, just as he had eighty years before.

You really worked the time line in my mind on this one, Keith. Great job. I had thought that Daniel and Frederick were roughly the same age. However, the end of the story showed my calculations were off. Excellent read!

This is lovely Keith. I thought at first both were children, but had an inkling one was older than the other. A very enjoyable read.

How we spend our time really is important. Maybe not at the time. Perhaps years later. I’m glad you take the time to make those wonderful graphics that enhance your wonderful stories.

I piddle around in Inkscape and Gimp. (the free graphics makers). Only do real basic stuff. And always add a graphic or find one to add to a post. Helps set the tone of the post sometimes.

We never know the influence we can have, as with children more is caught than taught. A very good story.

As others have said, ‘A touching tale of friendship’.
and, a few note, the twist at the end* very effective!
* perhaps more moebius strip than simple twist

Thank you so much, kind sir. Moebius strip, I like that (thanks Google for helping me out!)

Well, that was a delightful story of the bond between the ages and definitely worth waiting for.
Sorry, it took me so long to read it, Keith. I’ve had big problems with my internet connection, which I hope the Unicorns have now fixed!
So effective the way you’ve written it, their worlds totally real to each of them, and so to each other…
