A few days ago I wrote a 50-word story about a lamp post! I wish I’d had Dale’s picture to accompany it. If you’re interested, it’s HERE!
.

A thousand sparkling diamonds encrust a jet black sky. Snow beneath my feet glistens in the eerie light of a shimmering silver moon.
The hoot of an owl breaks the silence. A fox stands motionless, one paw raised, green eyes staring into mine. A moth flutters ’round a lamp, a bat swoops by.
Eyes heavy, I reluctantly wend my way home.
Throwing open the curtains, I gaze out at the bewitching world I’ve just discovered.
It’ll be gone when I wake, the night’s calm replaced by the bustle of the day.
And so to sleep, wishing I was a creature of the night.
.
Thanks to Rochelle for hosting and to Dale for the photo.

Lovely!
Thanks so much Sadje.
Very evocative Keith. I’m too old to be a creature of the night now. I need my sleep!
I’m the opposite – the older I get the less I sleep and I like nothing more than having a stroll in the early hours with just the sound of the sea for company!
Dear Keith,
Love the atmosphere. Well done, sir.
Shalom,
Rochelle
That’s kind of you Rochelle, thanks so much.
Wonderfully atmospheric
Thank you so much Neil.
Jings, that was wonderfully poetic!
What happened to you, Keith?
Thanks CE. Do you think I should have counciling?
Oh, Keith, never ask a question unless you know the answer!
Pretty sure we all know the answer to that question….
When I was growing up in the city, we could stay out until the street lights came on. No such thing out here in the burbs. Nice story.
I seem to recall something similar myself Denise! Thank you.
Your word paintbrush was full of wonderful things in this one, Keith. Made me want to go for a walk in the dark, but it’s raining and a bit chilly. Maybe tomorrow.
That’s so kind of you Linda. Tomorrow night it is then!
It doesn’t hurt to wish. There’s a lot to be said for the stillness of the night. Now I’m thinking of that song from The Phantom of the Opera.
…now you come to mention it! Cheers Lisa.
🙂
Had I known… I would have let you have the image 😉
However, what you did here was wonderful. I was strolling along with you in the peaceful quiet of the night.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing! Thanks for your company Dale.
Always a pleasure, Keith!
Sorry, that noise was me laughing at the moth story. Brilliant! Just brilliant.
And today, such poetic prose. Beautiful.
Haha, you’re forgiven Jenne! Glad you enjoyed it/them!
A sparkling vivid picture of night life and night critters. Daylight washes out such beauty. Beautifully written Keith.
It does indeed. Thanks so much Dora
This read like a song hummed under one’s tone, sleepily awake, dreamily in the zone. Lovely!
Thanks for your lovely comment Na’ama.
🙂
That was great.
Thank you so much.
It is a different world, sometimes i wouldn’t mind exploring at night but i get sleepy, too.
Try it Mimi, just once!
Now I want to be a creature of the night. You really gave it life K!
Go for it Tannille! Chees!
The night has a different sight & things look less eerie when there is light.
He is so enamored that he wants to be a creature of the night!
That’s exactly what I hoped to convey. Thanks so much Anita.
You made me wish I was there, walking through the snow in the quiet of night.
So very atmospheric. Really well done!
Thank you so much Sandra.
This is lovely – you really conjured up the feeling.
Thanks so much Liz.
A wistful and lyrical reflection, vivid and visual.
Thanks so much for your kind words.
gone are the days when you can walk out at night in peace. now you worry about being mugged. 🙂
A good point! I’ll carry a baseball bat in future!
I walk out almost every night. However sadly it is a very long time since I walked at night by the sea. You brought the night alive for me. Thank you
I live close to the shore, and in the early hours, the waves are all I hear. I’m so pleased you enjoyed it Michael.
Or … become second or third shift. Nothing wrong with that at all. I love the imagery here. Now that I live in the city, walking at night is more dangerous (cars not criminals although maybe that too) so I don’t really. I miss late-night walks in the country or on the beach.
Living in a small seaside town it’s very quiet after lights-out. It suits me!
The dynamics of night and day. Often, a pondering of mine. Great write!
Two extremes. Thanks Susan.
Beautiful.
Thank you so much.
There’s not much as beautiful as a warm summer’s night out under the stars.
Even nicer with a firepit and a pile of marshmallows to hand!
Is this why we sleep? To avoid the creatures of the night.
Some are best left alone James!
