Another day’s work over. She bid her colleagues farewell, wrapped herself in her warmest coat, wound a scarf around her neck and headed off into the wrath of a winter’s eve.
The freezing wind blew her brolly inside out, she dumped it in a bin. The driving rain assaulted her cheeks like so many piercing needles. A passing car splashed through a puddle soaking her from head to foot. She squinted whilst passing traffic lights, red amber green, red amber green. The blazing lights of passing cars dazzled her. A frustrated driver honked his horn, and her heart missed a beat. Noise, wind, rain, light, blinding light. If she wasn’t awake it would be a nightmare.
.
Just two more corners to turn.
One more corner and the street light beside her home would welcome her
A few more steps and she’d be safe.
,
The door closed behind her with a comforting clonk. For a moment or two she stood in the hallway and closed her eyes. It was warm. It smelt good. It was quiet, the silence sounded good.
She sat in her favourite chair. Logs hissed and crackled in the hearth, the flickering flames giving off an succouring orange glow. Her shadow danced upon the wall, her forever best friend. She drew up her legs and hugged her favourite cushion.
Two worlds. One beyond the curtains, hostile harsh and frightening. One within, secure, snug and cosseting.
Safe.

Thanks to Sadje for hosting What Do You See?

Oh, that was marvelous, dear Keith. I could intensely feel myself in both worlds …. the harshness of winter and the coziness of home. Well done!

That was a rough walk home. Beautifully described too. I felt the cold rain and splashes, and then the warmth of the fire. Well done, Keith.

You’ve captured how I feel when I am driving home from work, the moment I turn into my own neighborhood. It’s a sigh of relief.
