A few words …

for Friday Fictioneers.

To those they knew, Rose and Bill seemed the perfect couple. But all was not as it appeared. They concealed their troubled relationship behind closed doors.

Their neighbours hadn’t seen Rose for quite a while but that was not unusual as she often went to stay with her mother.

Bill was walking Poppy, their dog across a sun-scorched field when suddenly, she rushed towards some trees and started frantically scratching the soil, plaintively whimpering.

He snapped on her lead, tugged her away and dropped a single red rose to the ground

‘God forgive me’ he muttered as they turned and strolled away.

    Dear Keith,

A bit of an ominous ending. It doesn’t sound like Rose merely disappeared or died of natural causes. Things aren’t always what they appear. 😉 BTW, my granddog’s name is Poppy. 😀

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

PS While you recorded it, the word rose is missing from “single red to the ground”.

Well, there’s a coincidence! Thanks for the heads-up Rochelle, I’ll correct it!

Oh, Bill, what did you do? Poppy knows, that’s for sure! Dark tale, Keith

I like the discreet way you hint at foul play, with Bill dropping a single red rose at a location that excites Poppy.

No… methinks there will be no forgiving from God… if he is a believer, that is.
    Well done, you!

You did this one up right. Capital storytelling. You can love someone but still want to kill them sometimes. This is a good, safe way of doing it 😉

There must have been much trouble in that relationship. Such an ending. 🙂

Keith, something tells me Bill should’ve buried her further afield. Maybe she’d had enough of receiving one perfect rose every anniversary and demanded one perfect limousine (Dorothy Parker) instead, and Bill called her an ungrateful twat. The possibilities are endless. However, it looks like Bill’s future is looking rather confined. Well done.
    Best wishes,
    Rowena

You make some very good points Rowena. Being on the outside we’ll never know.

it looks like she took the secrets of their troubled relationship to the grave. it couldn’t have happened without her husband’s help.

I have a hunch that Rose won’t come back. I’m a bit fearful for her mother…

It looks like Bill had had enough of Rose.
Parting would have been better for him.
But, its too late. He’ll be without Rose, although
always trying to stay one step ahead. A lot of story, Keith.
    Have a wonderful weekend …
    Isadora 😎

I suppose there are many couples who conceal their troubles. Outsiders can never really see the true picture of someone else’s relationship – good or bad. This one took a surprising turn at the end though. Well told.

I knew this was a sad one when I saw the dripping red blood in the title. Well done, Keith.
