I wrote this piece five years ago and it was read by just a handful of people. I’ve been waiting for the chance to use it again – then Sadje’s What Do You See? challenge floated into view! I’m not going to attempt an audio version for reasons which will doubtless become apparent!
.
.
A girl sits alone on a pebbled beach. The sea, as still as a millpond. She floats a flickering candle on the water.
‘All you need is love’ she whispers.
One by one, townsfolk join her. ‘All you need is love’ they sing as the candle drifts away.
Somewhere in Russia, a devushka wanders into a square clutching a candle. Minutes later the square is filled with people singing. ‘Vse, chto tebe nuzhno – eto lyubov’. All you need is love.
Across the Latin world, joyful crowds gather. ‘Todo lo que necesitas es amor’ they sing as golden flames dance to the tune.
Across Africa, Asia and the Middle East people join in song. The world is illuminated by candles, brightened by song. To the east, south, north, and the farthest west they sing.
In war-torn countries, they lay down their arms and pick up candles. Sworn enemies sing together. ‘Kl ma tahtaj ‘iilayh hu alhabu’.
Suddenly the world is a happy place as we sing as one, ‘all you need is love’.
Then all falls quiet again.
A girl sits alone on a pebbled beach.
‘Love is all we need’ she whispers.

I wish this prophecy comes true Keith and we all lay aside hatred and weapons of war too chant together that all we need is love. Thanks for joining in with this beautiful story.

I’m inclined to think the world needs forgiveness as much as love. To love, to forgive and keep on loving in spite of faults, to love the other enough to take an honest look at ourselves and make changes, could save many a broken family.

I hope you realised that was meant to be ‘it’ not I, even though could be read that way?!
Have a happy, peaceful New Year … it’ll be quiet over here … cheers Hilary
