Today we’ll wander across marshland,  once the seabed, to Pevensey Castle. In the 4th century it was one of the strongest of the Roman sea-forts, and today, two-thirds of it’s towering walls still stand.

It’s also famously the landing place of William the Conqueror’s army in 1066 long before the sea retreated.

    Hi Keith – delightful photos … it’s an amazing land and so fascinating to know it was deep enough for ships to sail in … and then have that famous battle. Incredible what they knew in those days … cheers Hilary

      It is amazing. I remember as a kid digging into the soil to find seashells! Btw, that walk starts just before you enter Pevensey Bay. Thanks, Hilary.

    I can imagine this gets one’s imagine going:) Love especially the second capture with the view of what”s seen on the water. Ruins are always interesting to me. Emille

      It’s certainly seen a thing or two over the centuries. Built by the Romans, inhabited by the Normans and used a defence post against the Spanish Armada. Cheers Emille.

    I love the soft quality that these ruins seem to have, almost undulating with the landscape. I also like the lush greens – my WW has that this week, too.
